HELLO PEOPLE I HAVE A 944 2.5 LUX 1984 AND I HAVE A VERY LOUD METALIC NOISE THAT COMES UP THROUGH THE GEAR STICK. ALSO AS YOU CAN SEE ON MY OTHER POST I HAVE A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE AT LOW SPEEDS AND WHEN DE ACCELERATING ARE THE 2 CONNECTED, PLEASE PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR ADVICE AS I GO TO LE MANS IN 8 DAYS AND I WILL NEED TO GET THE CAR SORTED. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA OFF WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND ALSO HOW MUCH IT WILL COST, PLEASE HELP

Hi there,

I have a 2.7 944 and have had two clunking problems- both where down to worn CV joints. You can usually tell if the clunking noise increases as the engine increases speed.

Quite easy to sort out though..
Cheers John "Koga" Hope

thank you for your help where is the best place to get a CV joint and what is a CV joint please

Hi Oliver. Don't think that we are ignoring you [], it's just that we don't know what it could be (and it is bank holiday weekend so everyone is probably out enjoying themselves).

It's difficult to diagnose what a noise could be without hearing it, or also exactly where it is coming from. Is it from the suspension, the engine, front, rear which side etc. Does it vary with speed, go away with the clutch pressed? Is it worse on bumpy roads?

The gearstick has a rubber boot inside the leather gaitor which stops outside noise getting into the cabin. It 'could' be that yours has split causing the gearstick noise.

CV joints are either end of the two driveshafts that come out of the gearbox and attach to the rear wheels, so you have four. If you look under the rear of the car you will see both driveshafts have a rubber boot at each end, the CV joints are inside these rubber boots. If the clunking is a CV joint then they are about £130 plus an hours labour to fit, but some people have had success merely repacking the boot with fresh grease or turning the driveshaft around so the worn joint is on the other side. IE the joint next to the gearbox is now next to the wheel and vice versa.

I would seriously recommed you get a mechanic to look at it straight away if you intend to go down to Le Mans in it. In my limited experience things don't get better by themselves, but it could be fairly minor so better to fix it straight away before it damages something else which could be £££££'s (don't ask me how I know this [:D] )

Hi Oliver,

It's obviously a very loud noise otherwise you wouldn't have to SHOUT! [;)]

I'm with Paul 100% on his comments. Get a qualified Porsche mechanic (independant specialist) to have a look. It will save you much heart ache and avoid the frustration of replacing something that has no bearing on the noise at all. []

Oliver -see: http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faqcv.html

for more info, but as above, get it sorted pronto.

As a poor student(!) I just didn't have the time to fix a banging CV joint on my MGB, it eventually ripped out, fortunately just coasting upto traffic lights. Now if that had gone at speed.........the cause was the rear spring shackle mounting collapsing due to rust and the axle moving backwards and forwards.........the radiator peed out water from a weephole when hot anyway..........but I sold it with all faults and rust for a hundred quid and blew it in one night in a luxury hotel near Swansea with my girlfriend, now my wife.....but that was '84.....

Oh and if you do make it down to Le Mans, come and say hello in the Houx Annexe camp site. I'm in a party with two Baltic Blue Turbos, a red Turbo, a Metallic Grey S2 and a 993. There is also a meeting of Titanic 944's at Arnage corner at 1pm on Friday.

We managed 6 cars last year, hoping for more this year. There are 10 booked in the diary so far - http://www.titanic.co.uk/cgi-bin/eventsdiary.py

That's the first I've heard of it, but now I might well make it...

I'll be in the PCGB camping either in my Glacier blue cab or my mate's white '220' Turbo. That's the one that was involved in the mountain bike/supermarket walkway incident 2 years ao for those who remember, which got it (and us!) a picture in 911&PW.
