Please pray for LIL

I dropped off my Turbo at the bodyshop last night for a week of preening and pampering [8D] Bye bye to the 15 years of stone chips on the front end and wing mirrors, and byebye to a number of dings, scrapes and scratches all over the rest of the car. This is all being done because a very tiny section of corrosion has just started on the rear wheel arch, and they might as well do the pampering while they get rid of it [:)]

The last time I used a bodyshop (on the S2) it was the start of a 4 year battle involving bad workmanship, poor colour match, paint lifting and resulted in my having to buy a new front wing []

Please, please, please let Turbo LIL's experience be much nicer [:D]

Paul after my good luck recently Im sure your car is going to come back looking mint [;)] just as a matter of interest where have you taken it ?

i know the question has already been asked but im going to ask as well where have you taken your P.A.J. and on a more intimate note how much as my front end could do with a respray as i have one or two stone chips the size of two pence pieces [:'(] and a number of little dings in the bumper.

PS i hope it come back looking fantastic [:D]

I have taken it to a small place in Leighton Buzzard run by a Roger Olney. It was recommended to me by another Turbo owner who used him back in March and was highly impressed. Also in the yard at the same time was an old Ferrari and an old Austin Healey, so they are no stranger to older cars, dealing with corrosion and matching 'weathered' paint.

The yard looks like an old dump when you drive in but Roger knew his stuff, was prepared to talk me through things and immediately dug out lots of old paint books where we eventually found my paint code. Very importantly he also has a proper modern spray bake workshop in one corner of the yard.

His estimate was circa £300 with me supplying new stoneguards and a bonnet badge. It it was by far and away the cheapest quote I had, but it was not that which swung me, it was the way I felt reassured he knewwhat I wanted plus a personal recommendationfrom another owner. The advantage of working from a dump as opposed to shiny steel and glass showrooms is a huge reduction in overheads- I hope [:D]

I'll let you know how it turns out at the weekend and I'll pass on his number. He knows that I want a few small things doing to the S2 and also that I'm part of a 944 anorak community so hopefully he'll be looking for repeat business.

Personally I am TERRIFIED it'll be a mess [] but what can you do? [&:]

Hmmmm, Leighton Buzzard eh?

Not too far from me - let me know how it goes Diver - I might get some long overdue work done on my car...

Fingers crossed on the paintwork, it's often a bit of a lottery how good paintshops are, and they always say they can do the work well even when they can't. For those of you down this end of the country I have used a bodyshop near Honiton in Devon with great results and not too dear, did both doors, some chips on the nose and sills £300 and a cracking finish and match on Guards Red. He is called Tony Pulman and is the owner of T&T coachworks on 01404 850067, hope that's helpful, Andy.

I think there's every chance I'll be using Tony to sort out the Le Mans dent and some chips in the next few weeks so the cab can officially be offered for sale. I can feed back on that for anyone interested also.

The car is ready to go apart from the wheels and the paint already! [&:] (so the Turbo now has teardrop mirrors and alu bezels on the dash).

Good luck with your paint Paul. It can't be any worse than the story you told me about the S2.

She's back [:D][:D][:D]

4 days turned out to be 10 working days, but I did have a 'lovely' courtesy escort estate so I told them to take as long as they need.

The paint does look very good and I am very pleased [:D] I can tell that the badge panel has brand new paint compared to 15 year old on the bonnet but the colour match is very good and I don't think anyone could do better. Their price was so reasonable that I will probably get the bonnet done next month [8|]

They actually did a couple of extra things that I did not ask for and the car looks really, really good now. In total they painted the front PU, badge panel, popup covers, wing mirrors, part of the front wing, both cills, one rear wing, two sections under the boot, and the small rear valance by the exhaust pipe. They also pulled out a couple of small car park dings. This was all started because the rear wing had 2 or 3 tiny bubbles (which it turns out was caused by a previous repair when they stripped it). Total cost

£300 []

The only downside is that the front left indicator does not work. I've had a quick play with my voltmeter and it looks like the wire has not been plugged in behind the PU. I'm happy, and the s2 will be down there soon.

And the final bonus - Wow my Turbo feels quick tonight (after two weeks of escort estate 1.6 Si 16v [:D] )

Glad to see LIL is back and they have done a good job.

Did you have any corrosion on the cills ie. stone chips rusting etc etc

Mine has a bit so will get the brother in law to have a look at his bodyshop, although £300 does seem cheap!!!

My old neighbour rang me tonight, seems he has been buying dodgy exhausts off blokes in Northampton!!!

You seen anybody matching that description on your travels Paul??? Joking [:)]

Glad LIL is back

Catch you later

*whistle*looks innocent*

It's a small world with Porsche ownership isn't it? I hope it does him well, it took me bloody ages to make that exhaust shine [:D]

The cills had no corrosion, just more white bits than blue.

Just remembered one more downside. He gave me two touch up pots with the paint he had left over. As it was chucking it down with rain at the time I shoved them in my pocket and ran across the yard to get in the car. I only remembered the paint when I got home and reached inside my pocket for the house keys. You guessed it - both pots had leaked which means I now have a lovely metallic blue thigh [8|]

Tomorrow I shall be T-cutting my thigh then applying Zymol [8D]

Nice one, glad you got LIL back in good shape, and that price sounds excelent for the work he's done. It does seem to be very hit and miss with body shops, you never know what your going to get it back like[]

Wonder if he'll have a mad rush of 944s now!![:D]

Did he remove the front PU before painting, or was everything painted on the car?? I need to have my bumper painted still, (you may remember from the front engined day) and still haven't decided where to take it yet. There's a guy a lot closer to me that specialises in classics and custom work that I was going to take it to, www.customandbodywork.co.uk but I just always worry about a poor colour match like you.

Rich

Glad LIL is resprayed and looking A1 - £300 really is a dam good price for a job well done , like everybody states it can be so hit and miss with a bodyshop , never forget my Primera with Chromaflair/Flip/Flop Paint[:D][:D] having to go into a bodyshop for a front bumper respray ( the paint was £280 a litre ! ) and the bodyshop manager's body language did not bode well but after having a giggle and about 2 weeks work it did come out ok - sorry for going on [8D]

Now you've approved the quality - can we have the phone number for the bodyshop? I'd like to join the queue!

Glad it went well and I would like the details too! They are going to get sick of the site of 944's [;)]

BKE could do with a good fettle - I have little doubt that it will be more than £300 though.

Black shouldn't be too difficult to match. That said, I used to have a sod of a job on my old black Capri. You wouldn't believe how many spray can manufacturers sold a darker shade of dark grey and pretended that it was black.

Nope I'm keeping his details to myself until I've got the S2 booked in, I don't want him gettig too busy to see me [:D]

His name is Roger Olney at Linslade Motor Services and his number is 01525 374009. He seems to do most of the 'quality' work himself and is very knowledgeable. You will be put off when you see the yard and it's location but that's what keeps his overheads down I suppose.

John, he was recommended to me by Adam Dawkins who also has a solid black Turbo so I'm sure your black is the same. In fact I think Adam said there are actually only 2 true blacks in the Automotive industry.

usual disclaimers, I have no links, interests etc and if he sprays your car pink thats your lookout [:D]

Andrew S - he could be a perfect contact for your new venture [;)] only a few miles from MK
