Please stop this whining...

Can anyone help me? The ventilation system on my 993 emits a quiet whine at variable times. It goes if I turn the fan off or increase the speed on the dial.

Tell me I'm wrong, but I'm getting convinced that it's coming from the tiny fan that's in the rectangular panel on the facia. The little grille has loads of dust in it.

My questions...

1. Is this the cause of the whine?
2. Can I remove this panel & clean/refurb/lube the fan etc? If so, how?
 
You can clean the vent with a brush.

I have had similar whining noise - I took the pollen filters out and the noise stopped. Cut the filter flanges down and refitted - noise cured. The flanges were just touching the fans causing the noise. As the fan bearings wear they develop a bit of end float - just enough to touch.
