Pointless Question Alert!!!

Hi there,

In our quest for all things pork the husband and I were very kindly loaned a 911 C2 last year for a long weekend by OPC in Colchester (we actually took it with us to Eynsham Hall).

One of the things I loved about it was a nifty little button that I assume opened up a valve in the exhaust and made the car sound 'meaner' and very much more raw than the usual refined noise the 911 makes! I dearly hope that makes sense to someone!![:-] I would phone my OPC but fear making a complete ar*e of myself when i'm explaining what this button does and how it sounds.

I'm looking to update my 2.7 for an S soon and would definitely make this an option if it was available so, what is it actually called (spot the woman who has no idea what she's talking about) and can you get this option on the Boxster.

why would you ever switch the noise off though?

i've solved the Boxsters hairdresser hum by fitting a janspeed exhaust. now it sounds great

You can get a similar (but for Porsche Marketting reasons, slightly muted) effect with the Boxster Sport Exhaust.
This has the valves you mention, which are operated automatically (speed dependant) or via the switch.

Unfortunately Porsche do not offer the sport exhaust for the 2003 model year (and onward) as of yet. They re-worked the standard exhaust to make it "noisier" to start with.

The Janspeed option (as Helen says) is probably the most sensible (???[:D]) option.

Having recently gone from a 2.7 Boxster to a new S, you may not need the sports exhaust option - the 03/04 S is a lot louder than the 2.7 was - and it's a very different noise - much more like a 996 (C2 anyway). Also much more fun to drive as well!

The 911 C2 you tried had the 911 Tequipment sports exhaust.
This is a £1000 + VAT option when you spec the car, and possibly slightly more after market. It does not fit the GT2 or Turbo (not sure about the GT3, but I don't think so), nor does it fit the Boxster.
The Boxster options I have heard do not seem to be as loud.

When you start the car, it is by default in noisy mode.
Pressing the button on the dash switches it to quiet mode, which gives the same sound as a non sports exhaust car.

It is quite loud though, and jeopardises track days. This is the only real reason for switching it to quiet mode.

In multi-storey car parks and tunnels it sounds even better.
On the 996 area, one of the guys had it measured at 107dB at 4500, which is way too loud for most circuits.

Even on noisy mode it goes quiet around 40 mph. I read this is to comply with drive by noise limits. It complies with the letter of the law, if not the spirit.

Evo magazine also reckons it is an essential option.
