PORSCHE POWER GERMAN TRAFPOL
No escape for Brit autobahn racers

Porsche 997 Carrera S[FONT=verdana, geneva"]German traffic police have been issued with the Porsche 997 Carrera S in a bid to keep up with what have been described as Brits indulging in illegal, Cannonball-style races on the country's unrestricted autobahns. To be officially unveiled at the Essen motor show this Friday, the car gets a specially tuned engine, aerodynamic body kit and sports suspension as well as the standard blue flashing light and green and silver colours of the German police.

In the first operation last month, more than 100 British motorists in sports cars believed to be part of an illegal race were stopped.[]

I wonder if you can ordered this special 997 privately, perhaps without the Police insignia mind you with it could be fun?

Honest officer, I just ticked the green & white option box on the order form the blue light's came free[8D]

Is this the car in question ?

I wonder what sort of tuning have they given it?
I presume the 997 equivalent of the engine upgrade option that they had on the 996. (Although I think this is not yet available to normal punters?).
I don't think that rear wing is available to normal users either.

However, the lights on the top are not very aerodynamic, so the top speed must be affected. In which case I am not quite sure what the advantage is.

The key advantage is the psychological effect; any high speeder will think twice from flooring it if they see a Porsche behind them as they would know sooner or later it will catch up and then there will be even more trouble.

I wouldn't get too concerned personally. Norfolk police had a Lotus Esprit for publicity purposes a few years ago and admitted it wasn't a practical possibility as the lights blew off the roof if it went over 90mph.[:D]

Yes, I agree - nothing to get particularly worried about - our friendly german 'boys in green' have been using 911's as motorway patrol vehicles since the 70's (to my knowledge) - one thing is sure though - the race for the keys at the station at the start of each shift! Driving a 911 and getting paid for it? Sounds like a nice perk of the job![:D]
