MY03 996 C2 Tip. Car has done 46,500 and coming up for polyrib belt change in accordance with service schedule. Other day after trip of 20 miles there was a smell of hot rubber at rear O/S and in engine compartment on right hand side. No smoke though. Belt visually looked ok and was no hotter then normal. Had been using some WD40 around lid hinges/catch and some could have dripped into engine compartment. If this went onto belt could it cause it to slip and smell? Porsche parts catalogue give 2 numbers for new belt ending in 64 or 65 - I assume one is for air-con cars and one isn't but no clue which is which. Is it a straightforward job to change the belt? Problem of access is getting off airbox and I have been unable to release air mass sensor plug despite squeezing sides etc. Any help appreciated.

The job is very simple to do. I did my own last year and it probably took me around 1 hour tops. Richard very kindly supplied the diagrams and instructions for me and it was a doddle.

The rubber smell might be something you picked up on a tyre and got thrown onto the hot exhaust... They normally smell rubbery.
The latest belt for aircon cars is 996.102.151.66. There is a good DIY on RennTech: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=7061
To get the MAF off, undo the two security torx screws first, and pull it out of the airbox. You will then see the clip more clearly, which is round the back, and it will be more obvious how the connector comes off.

and I wont need to argue the toss when the 48K service comes up and they insist on belt being replaced..

I understand what you say, but the belt for a C2 is only £26.49+VAT for a genuine Porsche item, and you can get it cheaper elsewhere. Also, there's a certain satisfaction about DIY, and it really is a 30 minute job when you know how.
