Poor OPC Expierience.

My 993 Carrera went in Hatfield Porsche for the wiring loom recall Also, an O2 sensor was reporting defective on the Bosch Hammer. But thought would let the wiring loom change happen then recheck O2 sensor. The loom was eventually done (after they had the vehicle 3 days longer than expected). They "told" me all was well with car and the O2 sensor was fine.

Car still had problem of stalling under deceleration (on way home) and uneven idle in traffic. Took vehicle back to independent (Portiacraft - where vehicle is from and still warranted). They clagged up the Bosch Hammer and it didnt report as a fault but when they carried out a full set of diagnotics eg monitoring all parameters the O2 sensor was outputting a constant 0.45V and not fluctuating on varying load, hence, defective. Item was replaced while I waited and voila all is well in the 993 world again.

Porsche also failed to replace the diagnotic port cover and the engine bay fuse cover, but just left them on the rear seats.

How much do these places charge an hour?!!!! The technicians at Porticraft showed a genuine interest in the vehicle including 2 seperate mechanics taking it out for a spin so they seperately assess the vehicle.

Rant over........sorry...

Hatfield .... poor experience ...... seems to be a very common theme across many forums. I have certainly heard enough about them never to go near even if I broke down outside.

Ian.

This poor service by the OPC is inexcusable particularly when you consider how much they charge, and judging by the comments I have read on this and other forums recently, seems to be a common occurence with OPC's. My 10 year old 993 currently has a full OPC service history which I did have every intention of maintaining, but I'm beginning to wonder if I'm doing the right thing for the car and for my wallet.

Porsche Tonbridge are currently down in my books: they did a detailed PPI on my black 993 and failed to spot a 4 inch by 1 inch rust in back of front o/s wheel arch. OK so I missed it on the black car but I was relying on them and their £99 per hour to find everything. I found it during 1st wash 2 weeks after purchase, 3 weeks after the PPI and they dispute it was there at the time of ppi?!?!?!?

The ppi got a v detailed list of every stone chip but did not mention the rust at all. Latest is that I have the soliciottrs contacting them as they believe they did a good job and the photos supplied, are not good evidence!!!!!

What do you think of their value for money and of their Stevie Wonder approach?

Don't even get me started. I wonder if the OPC experience we get in this country is uniform to that received elsewhere in the world? In fact I wonder if Porsche Germany are aware of the many complaints OPC GB receives? Take your car to an Independent, they are after all supported only by their great reputation.

In defense of OPC's I have always had good service from Bournemouth OPC - not cheap but the repairs they have done for me have always been top notch.

Also they have just done an open day for us and checked our cars over for free and given advice on how to rectify any problems for the DIY types (like me!!)

Yes, I have to second John's remarks about Bournemouth OPC. However I'm sure that Alison with her blown 996 motor will not entirely agree!

Had a poor experiance with OPC Leeds lately....

Without the long story it just feels they aren't committed or really set-up well for 993's now...

had a few little probs, upshot was over £1200 to replace parts and even then they didn't seem keen - trying to price it so high I said no is was I felt..... so I did.

Took it to local independent and parts were repaired rather than replaced and total bill was less than £300.

not going back now....

Average OPC = daylight robbery plus total ignorance of anything air cooled.
Good Independent = Value for money plus years of experience with older cars.

I know where I'd go.

An easy comment to make about the big boys all being bad and the little 'uns all good. My experience of both has been a mixture of good and bad.

Better value for money with an independent and there is no doubt they are geared up more appropriately for the air cooled cars of yester year but, little things like just returning a phone call often seem beyond them. The OPC's seem much better at this which doesn't make one jot of difference to the car, but does make you feel like they have some interest in taking your money. I am literally having to force an independent to take my money off me for something I want doing. Perhaps they have too much work at present but I am sure the OPC would have raided my wallet well before now without leaving me waiting. My local OPC has never once not called me back within the timescale agreed. The independent doesn't even ring me to fob me off - I have to chase them to get fobbed off!
