Poor reception

I have lousy radio reception in my 944 S2 Cab - I checked the wiring diagrams and found that there is a booster in the car which connects between the radio and the windscreen aerial, and if I disconnect the power from that the reception disappears completely, so that kind of proves that the booster is working.

In my Mondeo, I can pick up about 20 stations right outside my house with a short aerial on the roof, in the Porsche, I get 2 stations with good strength, and one or two more with low strength.

Does anyone know if this a common problem, or could it be that the booster is not working efficiently?

I even went to the expense of buying a new head unit last week which hasn't improved things at all. (But to be honest, this was just an excuse to get a new head unit anyway!!)

Hi George
I had the same problem with mine some time back. Eventually found a blown fuse, can't remember which one but it wasn't for the radio. Replaced the fuse and problem solved. I've puzzled on this ever since.

I find mine gets just as good reception as my other car so the system can work as well as a conventional areal. Maybe the earth to the arial amp is causing loss of efficiency. Maybe replacing the amplifier altogether will help. I know you can get modern equivalents as a previous car had a 'powered' arial that required an amplifier and when I replaced the OEM head unit with an aftermarket one I had to buy a stand-alone arial amp. It was only about ÂŁ15 IIRC.

Quite often the connection to the screen comes adrift. Search as there are instructions on how to check/fix it on here, I think posted by either Mik or maybe me in reply to Mik.

Hi Fen,

Thanks for the info. I had tried searching for 'Aerial' and Reception' but got no results. I finally found the article you posted here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=90518&mpage=1&key=radio%2Caerial

I just went out to the car and found the connector to the windscreen - it's in one piece but surrounded by that furry stuff you often see around poor electrical connections, so Im going to have a good look at it over the weekend when hopefully there'll be some daylight.

Until then, go away and enjoy your holiday!![;)]

I am very happy with the radio reception on my S2 coupe, but I only ever listen to Radio 4 (although Mrs zcacogp occasionally listens to other things) and it's the first car I have ever owned that has had any radio reception at all!

I can pick up quite a lot of stations at any one time, so the system is possible of working well.

An aside - why did Porsche fit a roof ariel to the 968? The lack of a visible ariel on the 944 is a great feature, in my opinion, it's a shame they didn't continue it with the successor.

It's a damn sight better than the retractable ariel that Ford got at Halford's reduced to clear section and then stuck on the new XK..........[:'(]

Interestingly, their reason was that the US market demanded the better reception, so a windscreen ariel was unacceptable. Best tell every other car maker in the world, then!

Oli, if you were a member I'd promote you. Radio 4 listenership should be compulsory for the 944 Register. [:)]

Paul,

What you're saying is that I need to become a member, aren't you? I know I should join - I am after all really only trespassing on this site until I cough up some cash!

R4 ... it's a bad habit I got into at university, and haven't yet managed to kick. (The funny thing is that my folks subjected me to it as a child, and I never enjoyed it. However, in my advancing years I have succumbed as well!) The Archers ... that theme tune will ALWAYS mean something to me. Should I ever feature on Desert Island Disks I will have to take it as one of my tracks ...

To receive Radio 4 would be bliss. It's the one I listen to most, but in my Porsche it's the hardest to receive.

Fortunately, the new head unit I bought has DAB but I haven't fitted it's aerial yet - I want to get the FM aerial tamed first. Another job for the weekend. Once that's done I might even have a choice between Radio 4 and BBC 7. WooHooo!

Mine is fine (seriously good in fact) now that I supplied it with power and cleaned the earth.

It may have had its power disconnected by a previous owner ignorant of its existence? The power cable is wrapped around the coax. Also check the earth.

some dipstick prev owner had someone drill a hole in my wing and fitted an electric one, how irritating, yes the screen edge contacts look a mess but who in the right mind drills a hole in the car, thought it novel for a bit but it looks too old skool even for an 88s, any suggestions as a replacement or fix would be cool,

*cough*

I listen to Radio 4 also (as does Mr Sims), though I also listen to Radio 1, BBC7, Virgin and Planetrock. I couldn't stand R4 on FM with all the associated whistle and hiss though; there's been DAB in my car for 5 1/2 years now.

It's good to know that the system is capable of delivering a good signal, so my plan for the weekend is to clean the contacts up where they connect to the windscreen, getting rid of the buildup of electrical corrosion in the process (I suspect this might be the culprit), and check the earthing of the booster. If that dosn't work I'll be off to the local ICE shop to buy a replacement booster. If that fails, then it's time to swap for a 997 Twin Turbo.

George,

Mine is out of fuel at the mo, the rear tyres need replacing and Mrs zcacogp has stuffed the ashtray with chocolate wrappers which I can't be bothered to get out.

Can you pick up one of those 997TT's for me while you're there please? I'd like a nice dark red one.
