Popping carbs etc

Any suggestions.........The car came out of storage early this year and hasn't been right. Firstly, when I took the car out it ran OK, until about it warmed up. It then started to hesitate upon acceleration and would backfire through the exhaust. After stopping and switching off the car it didn't want to start again until I left it for about 10-15mins. Managing to get the car home (backfiring and hesitating) I changed the plugs (no difference), HT Leads (no difference), rotor arm and cap (no difference). I checked the jets (only visually) for blockages, but all seemed OK. I have now bought a new coil in the hope this may resolve the problem...Will be fitted this W/End .Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

Before you spend your hard earned cash, why don`t you check the timing, dirty fuel, fuel pump not blocked?

Have fun

Paul Kelley

PS Will you be playing for England or sitting on the bench/[:D][:D][:D][:D]

Hi'a I'm only In Southampton so if you want a drive out I could pop over and have a look..

AS Paul rightly said check some basic's but more than likely the carbs.. carb set up is somethink I have taken years to understand and it's only now I can get the car running as it should be..

Ok the fuel by the sounds of it, is not getting though the accelerator jets.. more than likely blocked, also alot of the carbs have too much ajustment when they are running so you many have one jet chucking in way too much and then 3 that don't work!!

Air leaks you need to give out more info on the carbs

Age... from last refurb
Make
Model
and are they the right ones for the car.. I have seen solex carbs on a car and they are for Alfa's!!

What disy are you running.. ?

lots of basic stuff to look at..

Oh dear not another burgandy red!![:D][:D] 6808 [;)]

give me a bell 077 33 444571 you can pop over ( well popping alot by the sounds of it.. ) or I can come to you.. prob best you come to me as i have a work shop full of stuff spare coils well spare just about every thing.. Ask Darren [:D] he was alittle shocked how much stuff I had [&:]

Thanks for the responses. I've checked the timing and fuel, even replaced the fuel filter.
912UK: Carbs were changed from Dellorto's to Weber 40IDF's about a year and a half ago when the engine was rebuilt by Andy Prill. Distributor is a 090 (I think) I know it's the correct one as Andy supplied again.
I would appreciate your advice on the problem and will make contact shortly. Don't know if the car will make it to Fareham though......Worth a go. Are you around this weekend ??

Dan

I should be yes give me a call..

Hmm Andy did the engine.. ok well we can knock ALOT of the possible list and concentrate on what's been changed since he did the engine.. I'm a Solex man and hence have taken years to learn them, Andy is a Solex man as well..

Ok now the 090 is not right BUT!!! I am guessing your saving 009 , now I have to see when he did the engine as I can't see him fitting an 009 ( Barry Curtis YES as he feels there is more to 009's hmmm interesting thought and one that is open to debate ) but Andy wouldn't have let an engine go out with an 009 for a street car anyway. So some one must have changed that.. also another thing to look at is ... there is a modified 009 on the market call RSR0012 and this is a sticker over a 009 disy that has been modifed to match the advance curve of a 050 disy well more like the 031 which is the orginal one. so if the sticker has come off it might say 009 which still would be right BUT!!! I think Will at CSP stamped XXX's over the 009..

I do need to get out more..[&:]

What about valve clearances? any one messed with these..?
how long standing I mean I have had fuel in there for a year and still it ran not good but ok.. one tank of fresh and it was all clear..

It is a known fact that modern petrol left in fuel tanks deteriorates and tends to separate out the benzene now added to cope with the reduction in lead additives. It can also deposit a lacquer in components,ie jets, transfer tubes etc.It might be worthwhile draining off the old fuel and adding new petrol.
Even crude devices like 2-stroke strimmers, chainsaws, hedgetrimmers & garden vacuums suffer.I had to strip one of my strimmer engines and "boil" the carb to get rid of these deposits.I now empty all fuel tanks over winter.

Yup. Dead right. My garden machinery man calls it "stale fuel" You have to put in fresh fuel at the start of the season.

Hvaing stored a number of my cars for over a year before re using them.. It's not the biggy people think.

it's True but these cars are basic not computer loaded..

I am sure it will be part of the problem but I think there is more to it , still a simple fix I'm sure..

we will have this car running as smooth as very soon I'm sure.. would be good to have another 912 in 6808 local to me as well.. should make people look twice [:D][:D]

You can usally tell when petrol has gone stale, not only does it leave a residue but it also smells like varnish. There are anti-oxidant fuel additives available that prolong the separation but I think they're aimed more towards petrol mowers and the likes. Just wondered if anyone has tried anything similar?

I have a bottle of it on the shelf.. it looks nice.. it came free with a tank repair kit.. I used it once.

I am free this Sat morning if you call me I can get an address and pop over in the 912 as long as it's not raining.. Sorry Bud I lost your number on my phone.. I get about 20+ calls aday on it and now it could be one of 30 numbers to try and call back..

Mark,

Are you free this weekend to cast your eye over the car?? Hopefully the weather will be better this weekend. I'll give you a call tomorrow.
Cheers

Dan

Hey Dan yep I ment to call you. Ok I think Saturday afternoon i'm ok am not and Sunday not really so Sat midday I guess.

How's the car running now Dan?

Those valves where out abit I know Andy likes to have them running alittle larger for the running in period, but 2000 miles later they just needed alittle ajustment. ( sewing machine is the sound you need ) But that Carb base gasket was definatly tracking across causing the the carb to be adjusted to suit the air leak. Which is why it was running so rich.. not good.

Glad we found that. Not sure if paper gaskets are better rather than those odd gaskets, I have found a set of webbers. I will look at the base later and try and make some to see. You will always need a certain amount of crush on the gaskets but it seamed those orginal ones didn't do that. Hence all that popping and banging and then being over adjusted to try and over come the air leak.

All that and the rich fuel will not do the cylinder bores any good or the balance of the engine as it was the left carb. So make sure you get the car to have the Co2 levels checked and make sure it's not unning too rich. Then get out and use it more!!! [;)]

was a good run to Winchester on the test run.. Wounder what people thought when to cars the same colour where zooming along! [:D][:D]

let us know how you get on.. I do feel a 912 Southern Run coming on.. with a growing number of 12 owners with in the Hampshire /Barks area.

Mark,

A big thank you for your time and help at the weekend - very appreciated. On the journey home the car was hesitating quite a lot under normal acceleration and the only way to overcome this was to floor the accelerator - full throttle. I think a trip to a carb specialist/setup is due - anyone got any recommendations ??
Must say, the run down the A34 was good fun (car seems to like being flat out). What everyone must have thought when two 912's, both in burgundy red, turned up at Tesco's I don't know.......
With regards to the gaskets, I'm thinking of buying a set from CB Performance in USA. Have a look on their site and type in 'super seal intake gaskets' reckoning on replacing all 4, on both carbs and possibly doing away with the extra adaption plates (why their on top of the Solex to Weber adapter I don't know)
Once again, many thanks for your time and help. Hopefully, I 'll pop over to Fareham for a better check on things and to have a go in your 912.

All the best

Dan

If you can get to Tewksbury - Raceshack will be able to sort out those IDF's on the rolling road. They do lots of IDFs, tripple and double chokes.

This sounds to me like the emulsions are blocked. Have you take then jets out at all and had a look.
Is one bank worse than th eother - colour of exhaust?

When we started the engine was running way too rich and this was a combination of two things I feel. So rich it was making your eyes water

One the left carb having prob a small air leak when Andy's guy was tuning the carbs, hence it would have been set up alittle rich

Two the leak getting worse and then the MOT man " having a stab at trying to make it run better " completely killed the set up

the hesitant is defo carbs and can now be sorted I recon with a propper tune up, Then I recon your all sorted.

I didn't start to check the jets as I am not a webber man and also we just ran out of time. It's on the right road to being fixed now that's the main thing. Also recheck those valves in 1500 miles time.

Yes it was fun we do need to a Southern Run some time when the weather is good. After I left you Jo and I had a great time away thanks to our freinds at a rather nice place in the country , Chewten Glen

I was alowed to park my car right out the front next to this tank. I think they liked it more than the bently

DSC04436.jpg

now I am rubbish at my famous people but that Bently had the plate A1 ANS is that Alan Sugars? i didn't see him or any one like him but there was sure alot of wealthy people..

So how is the 912 now did you get it down to the carb guy?

lking to take a spin out at the weekend if dry with the other new 912 owner ( white one )
