Hi
i am terribly obsesed with classic porsce carreras , mainly the 964 modle and early 911 modles (coupes)
this will be my first time buying a classic car so i am very green to what is the main things i should know before purchasing such a car

if here is any 1 here who is willing to give me some advice about owning a car like this , egsample running maintanence of the car , problems often encountered with this model , ect , i would really appreciate it ,,

also very important at the moment.. if any 1 has or knows of such a car for sale please contact me asap,,

thanks
ben

There are millions of books on this subject, most of them are very good.

There are some models more desirable than others due to rarety or speed or fashion.
I think above all do not think early 911's are smooth fabulous super cars, as they are not, but they are certainly charismatic!

I would find one from a good specialist, have it independently examined by a proven specialist and buy the very best condition you can afford.
You need to buy all the Porsche magazines in the newsagents and join the Porsche Club whose own magazine each month has stacks of suitable cars for you.

Read everything like mad, and try not to buy the first 911 you see!

Take your time unless you really like DIY in the garage.

Hi Ben.

Your choice of whether to go for a 964 or early car (pre 74) will largely depend on budget. There is no such thing as a cheap early car these days. What sort of budget do you have in mind?

Take your time finding the right one they all can be money pits if you get it wrong ,I would always get them checked out before you part with any money don`t let your heart rule your head when you do decide to go for it
I would try to have a test drive in lots of different years and models they are all different

hi
thank you all for the replies ,,
well my reason for an early porsche is not speed but that its so old but still an amazing car , a car that i CANT get fed up of seeing ,not like other sports cars which i like but i will be of in a short while.
and i preety much like alomst all porsche modles, so something to help me decide is which 1 would require 'least' work ,????
thats why i was looking into the 964 as i was told by a porsche machanic that is a modle that is most easy running.. is this true ?

thanks again for the replies

i am currently tryn to get the book
Peter Morgan's buying guide ,

as i heard it should be usefull

budget is still uncertain at the moment ,
I am from Malta so my budget really depends on the particualar car that i find as i then have to c the year of the car and spk to the transportation autority to see how much the registration will cost ,as thsi is a HUGE problem here :( ..
thats preety much wht made me look into the pre 74s as registration is by half

Ben
I have both , the 964 feels like a modern car but like all modern cars more to go wrong , servicing cost more etc and harder to work on as I said try to find someone that will let you have a ride or drive of each modle that you are thinking of getting and take your time looking It tuck me 2 years to find the 3.2 and a lot of miles seeing a lot of crap cars, have fun graham

ay graham ,
thanks . ye i will try find some one but here in malta it is not a common car so will not be an easy task ,
i am in no particular rush to buy the car so i will take my time looking for the best 1 possable ,

If you happen to come accross 1 or hear of 1 that you would recomened , i will be more than gratefull

thanks
ben

Are you looking to buy from the UK and ship to Malta?

What is the climate like in Malta - warm and dry? If so an early car might be ideal.

The issue with early cars is the restoration. Once restored, or if you can find a good unrestored car, then they are as cheap as any Porsche to look after as well as being the simplest car for looking after yourself. Because of the high restoration cost good cars are expensive to buy in the first place.

964s are cheaper to buy but again finding a good car is not easy. As stated there bad ones out there which will cost money to fix. A more modern car but also more difficult to look after yourself.

In the wet UK climate a 964 will survive being used all year round where as I would not like to use an early 911 due to rust issues. If the climate in Malta is generally warm and dry this will not be an issue.

ye
i am looking to buy from uk and ship or more likely pick up and drive down to malta

jsut did it with a 997 carrera 4s and it was grand

ye the climate is HOT and 'dry' though we did have a wet winter but nottin like the UK
quiet a humid country though.. is that a issue?

the car will be mainly used on the weekends ,as i work through out the week and drive around in a smart,,
essteticly my fav porshces are pre 73 ,, jsut casue its so old but stil ljsut wow

i was told by a porsche dealer who used to be a mechanic ,that porsches should not rust ,that if i find rust on 1 than it has most probably been in a accident and re sprayed,, is this usually the case ?

i need 1 which is in gr8 condition and does not require a lot of knowledge when it comes to taken care of the engion , this is my main concern on a old car ,,

i have found plenty of porches on piston heads .com . and classic cars uk .com

though i would much rather purchase the car from eitehr a approuved porsche dealer ( do they approve old cars )
or from some 1 who is involved is such a group as yours , cuase it shoe a little more reliabitly and interest in the car

Yes rust is a big issue on pre-74 cars in the UK. Shells were only galvanised from 76/77 onwards. Hence when buying an early car pay the money and get one with a sound body. Price on UK cars seem to range from 15K (maybe more these days) to 60K for a pre-74 car depending on year, model and condition. There is no such thing as an approved old car but there are a number or reputable dealers specialising in older cars.

964 shell is fully galvanised but they do still rust in a few places such as around the front and rear windowscreens. The guys in the 964 forum section should be able to help you out with 964 potential body issues. 964s generally have less body issues and more engine issues.
