i found one really nice porsche 924 but it's 1977 year of production and it has a 4 speed box, what do i need to conver it to 5 speed.
do i need just new gearbox or ?

Thanks

Hello Kiril.

Why change it?
If it works well it is better to keep it original and save time, effort not to mention money!

Is the 5 speed box with overdrive? if it is than i think that it would make a diference, cause i will use the car a lot, not just the weekends and will drive lot's of highway, and i have lot's of free time :)
i already called a guy who sells porsche parts here in Macedonia, and offered me a 5speed box in excelent condition for 400euro not cheap but, will change it my self i have the tools a garage and lot's of experience with cars but never owned a porsche (still dont), and i dont know if i need to change more stuff for the new box like gear linkage, shifter etc...

Best regards Kiril

Thanks :|
i dont have the haynes yet, cause i havent bought the porsche yet, cause i havent sold my current car yet...
cant wait to buy it :)

Why didn't you say, we are always happpy tp help in that sort of situation; what I wont do is post just for people who can't be botherd to look it up.

4 speed
overall ratio
1) 12.384:1
2) 7.310:1
3) 4.78:1
4) 3.324:1

5 speed 016/9 or H pattern

1) 14.8:1
2) 8.736:1
3) 5.59:1
4) 3.971:1
5) 2.996:1

The 016/9 is the only gear box that will fit the 20mm input shaft of the N/A 924 with matching mountings. As far as I can tell the external dimensions of the 016/9 are similar to the 4 speed with fith gear attatched as a sort appendage in an additional chamber added to the original casting, separate from the main gear clusters, so the box is about 100 mm longer with the fifth gear extension a mere 10mm from the spare wheel well. There is a plastic tube about 35mm dia right through the belll housing through which the linkage passes. If you are even considering this swap, you must think yourself competent, and it is not beyond a competent mechanic with a trolley jack. You will need an 8mm splined key for the drive shafts and an 8mm allen key for the socket-cap head bolts in the coupling; access both bolts via holes in the bell housing. I suggest pulling a latex glove over the exposed end. You will need to retract the plastic tube and tilt the box at a fair old angle.
