Porsche 944 / 968 Alternator

The alternator on my 944 S2 has become very weak recently and needs replacing or reconditioning now.

My question is does anyone know if a 968 alternator can be fitted to the 944 S2 ? Are the brackets the same ?

I think the S2 is a 14V and the 968 is a 14.5V , would this be a problem ? Or would it give more power so to speak ?

Im going to say no, or at least be cautious. There are several 944 part numbers with one 928 generator being shared too, but the part numbers for the mounts are different.

This doesnt prove that the 968 '#109' part is different, of course but if the mountings part numbers had been the same then you could have said for certain that it would physically fit.

The road tax runs out end of month and I was then going to tax my other car and use that over winter and lay up the 944 .

I removed the voltage regulator and it is well worn , I managed to get hold of a new voltage regulator for 12.00 pounds as oppose to 69.00 Porscha Part are asking !!!

It pays to shop around !! I also located a 1994 alternator from a 968 at the right money , and with it been a lot newer then if it does fit the 944 this would be a long term fix .

I am still investigating if they are interchangeable or not . I might just take the risk and buy it and try to fit it , I think they use the same bracket as the 944 , only difference is the 968 is more powerfull .

I took the alternator from my V5 Golf I drive most the time to be reconditioned and they gave me a higher Amp one in exchange . I asked if it would be ok and he smiled and said of course , you are getting a better alternator in exchange for the lower Amp you brought in .

What I have found that may be interesting to you all ! the air cooler intake that goes to the back of the alternator , has no filter ? I found that inside the alternator there is a lot of old leafs and general dirt .

When I refit the alternator , I will fit some fine netting same as can be seen inside a MAF air intake unit to prevent crap going into the alternator .

I also find interesting how they have a cooling fan attached to the front pulley and the air cooling intake to the rear ? So when the alternator is working , it will have two amounts of air pushing against each other ?

Or does the front extractor fan attached to the pulley extract the air ? interesting to find out ??
