If all else fails you could remove the rear seats, attache a power source then open via the button. Will be a pain to do..

Side note nice S2 cab, ive got one in black!

Hi all,

I am a new member of the club!

I am looking for some help on this please - this is a 1989 944 S2 convertible (picture attached) and the battery has gone and I'm unable to open the boot using the key - any recommendations please?

Thanks,
Patrick

if you open the passenger door, then remove the air vent in the door pillar you might find an emergency boot opener cable

Thanks very much! It's not actually mine, although I would like it to be. It's my mothers, owned since 89 and has only done 27,000. It's such a lovely car!

I will give this a go and report on how I get on tomorrow!

Waylander is correct (assuming the S2 convertible is rigged the same as a 968 convertible). Removing (carefully) the vent in the B pillar visible when you open the passenger door should reveal a wire cable with a loop on the end that releases the boot. Failing that, get underneath the car and find the big wire on the starter motor, connect the pos of your jump leads to that and the neg to a suitable chassis place, that should get power to the car to release the boot via the button in the drivers side footwell - although you may have to turn the ignition on to energise that button.

Hi,

I have just had a play but sadly the battery is as flat as a pancake. I have removed the air vent in the passenger door and saw some sort of cable covered in a black sort of sponge insulation. Is that the cable you mean and how hard a yank does it need? I quickly gave it a yank but I didn't want to be overzealous, especially if it isn't even the cable!

Here is a link to the image of the thing that might be the cable... https://ibb.co/inFUGK

Thanks,

Patrick

Patrick, that looks like wiring, the emergency release cable on my car is a thin braided steel cable, no covering.

Is it not the same as the coupe? You have the terminal under the bonnet that you can attach a charger to. Don't ever try to jump-start it from there, but you can connect a battery charger.

Hiya Paul,

When the battery was working, the electronic button in the footwell was not opening the boot. You could hear it trying to but it was like it didn't have enough power to do so...

That's a new one on me Paul?

thats correct, its the power for the ABS system and its directly connected to the battery, the reason is on the LHD cars the battery could have both the cables connected to it directly as its up there, RHD cars have this "connector" to join the cables up, adds a handy charging / emergency point for UK cars

also there is no cable on a 944

ahhh..that's why it's new to me....I don't have any silly ABS...mine's as God/Porsche intended before safety regulations spoiled the design...:)

Pretty sure your boot lock release still pulls a cable in the boot when you turn a key rather than operating a switch which requires the motor to pull the cable, so when your battery is flat / disconnected you can still open your boot. (on the negative side it can probably be opened with a large screwdriver turning the lock, which is possibly why they changed). I think all the cars with the keyswitch setup have the power post in the scuttle area to allow access to the battery when it is flat.

Evening all! Thanks for the help with this - I have finally got this fixed but it was extremley difficult! I managed to get access through the boot but fiddling around with the lock or pulling any release cable wasn't the solution. I turned out the lock had corroded and it was popped open with the help of a very long crow bar while someone was turning the key in the boot. No permanent damage and all now fixed. A new battery and I'm ready for a small village (Tewin) car show tomorrow!

Thanks again for your help - pictures to follow
