Porsche 944 S2 Convertible

Good afternoon.
Bit of advice if ok. A mate of mine is lookin at the above car which is a G Reg in black with black roof and interior. Condition is very good apart from a leaking hydraulic steerino hose. Last owner 18 years who has maintained the car himself so no real history. 120k miles.
Wanting £7000 is this a worthy investment or should he keep looking for one with more history.

cheers for help.

Si.

As the owner of an S2 Cab I would say thats reasonable if the bodywork is in good shape.

Good luck.

I wouldn't buy one without a thorough pre-purchase inspection from a good Porsche specialist familiar with the model. It could be a perfectly okay example (all be it with no history), or it could be a neglected vehicle needing £10k or more spent on it. So, for the sake of just £200 or so, have it inspected.

Stamped service history isn't that important on cars this age, what is important is receipts for the work done while in the current owner's ownership. You need to see those important things like the belts have been done. Like all cars check it over for corrosion, you need to do this whether it's got a full history or not. The 944 rots from the inside out, so use an 'endoscope' to look into the sills, check the sill to floorplan welds and also the torsion bar mounts, these are all places that rust. Next, up, have the fuel/brake lines been changed, if not budget for this as they will need doing ASAP, be prepared for changing a lot of rubbers, most need this doing, my car too has some bits that need replacing.

Look into the MoT history too, of any potential buy.

Many ads may say ‘exemplary, cared-for example’, but often a quick look at the MoT history shows they can’t be bothered to take care of some of the simplest things for a well cared for car [;)]

Sounds a good price, I paid £16k for a 60k car with fsh. Drive it and love it, can't go wrong at that price.

As Pete says above, check for tinworm. Last S2 convertible I saw was so rotten on both sills extending to front and rear wheel arches I was surprised it had not collapsed completely. I'm sure they can be lovely cars, they're so similar to my 968 cab that I love, but even if no external timworm is visible get an endoscope down into the interior of the sills as an absolute minimum. Hope it worksd out for your mate, as a good one would be a lot of summer fun.
