Porsche 944 Transmission Questions

Hello im a new member just joining the forum :)
Ive owned a 924 for over a year, and still own it and just recently bought a black 944 ive had it over 3 weeks or so now and have encountered a problem, i went to pull off at the lights last night and there was a massive bang and clunk and now when you attempt to pull off the whole rear off the car sounds really bad with massive clunking and banging noises, however it does still pull off so the clutch and gearbox are still intact which is good news, apparently its the same on both wheels my friend said that both of them looked like they were 'locking' as they moved. so im pretty sure its not driveshafts. my money is on the diff.
The question is, and it might sound stupid but would my gearbox out of my 924 fit straight onto my 944? are they the same?
would that kind of noise be the transaxle or anything like that? its really confused me because there was no symptoms or anything before this happened it literally happened out of nowhere. was driving absolutley fine and then just went to pull off and this happened. the gearbox was slightly 'whiny' before but i just thought these cars had a bit of a whiny gearbox, sounded like the old school mini gearbox's any adivce or information would be great! thanks in advance.

Your description sounds to me remarkably like what I experienced when the rubber donut in the clutch went AWOL on my early 944... It might be worth looking at. Especially as I don't think the gearboxes are the same, and I have a feeling the torque tubes are different to match... But I could be wrong here... And definitely so if it is a 924 S (that should be the same) Even if it does fit, I would check the ratios are the same.

The drive shaft within the torque tube is 20mm dia in a 924 and 25mm dia in a 944. You can fit a 924 Turbo tansaxle which shares the 25mm shaft dia but you have to change other things too. 944 Transaxles for most applications are cheap (£100-£150 max and sometimes far cheaper), so I wouldn't worry about that, particularly.
