Porsche 944 Turbo/S2 Wings

This is for a friend of mine who is considering buying a pair of New wings from OPC for his late 944 Turbo. Total cost works out at £692.40 per wing after discount (£1384.80)

Is there anyone who makes aftermarket metal wings that are of high quality but not at Porsche prices or is there anyone out there with a pair of mint wings for sale?

He is happy to give good money for a pair of very good second hand wings but ideally a pair of new wings if there is a supplier .

I know a breaker who must have about 20 of each side in good enough condition, but he is in Germany, should I ask him?

My (cross posted) advice would be don't waste your money! Without factory underseal they will have corroded through in a couple of years. Better to have an otherwise good wing repaired by a decent restorer. What isn't rusty now never will be.

When I last bought one they were about £230 plus VAT each (which was a fiver less than the original style wing!)!

Before fitting they would be properly under sealed with all the seams sealed correctly. What he doesn't want to do is fit wings that are going to go a couple of years later or ones that need metal sections fitted to make them 'roadworthy'

If you wouldn't mind and if he could supply some pictures that would be great [:)]

This is the problem Martin: they cant really be sealed properly. I watched mine being worked on and they did a thorough job but corrosion still came through.

Thoms solution will probably be best.

I'm not aware of any aftermarket wings other than fibreglass? I'm not sure that there's enough demand for them that it'd be worth setting up manufacture of quality steel wings at what would probably be a price close to what Porsche charge. In aluminium, though, that'd be nice? [8|]

This is a problem I think we blow out of all proportion. When my car was patched up and painted, the guy had in a Vauxhall Victor, Mark 5 Cortina, Aston DB6, an ex-rally Alpine thing that was a mess of decayed fibreglass, and my 944. They're all cars, made of stuff, and all repairable in different ways. You could argue that the simple, steel 944 is amongst the easiest on that list, and certainly needed less work than the others!

Classic cars are restored all the time, often without the new panels we still have the luxury of buying from the factory at what aren't ridiculous prices. Repairs, new fabrications, used parts patched up, they are all perfectly good options. It's partly about how well a repair is carried out, but more important is annual cleaning, treating any issues early, and protecting.

You pay your money and get different levels of perfection, I guess. I had a very cheap patch-up and spray, as there was no option. Given a couple of grand more, I'd have fitted two new wings and perhaps even two sills. But, the expert was very reluctant to do this, as his opinion was to replace as little original metal as possible on a car this well-built.

Martin, Porscheshop advertise steel wings for £625 inc vat. I rang them to ask where they were sourced from but didn't really get a satisfactory answer.

Thanks for the replies, it turns out I have 2 friends now wanting a pair of wings each [:-]

One is going to put on new OPC wings and I may have sourced an excellent passenger wing from a forum member so will require one drivers side wing for the other car.

Isn't that a significant hike over a couple of years back - like double? that price isn't for 4 wings is it?

Yes, prices have gone up 2-3 fold in the last 5 years
