Porsche 996 Coolant Leak

Hi All,

After a bit of advice/direction.

Been searching for a coolant leak for some time now as I noticed a small puddle on the garage floor and then a drip coming from the rear casing of the engine adjacent to the gearbox hosing.

I checked the coolant level in the reservoir and noticed it had dropped. I then checked all the hoses and connections around the area, ran the engine up to temperature but found nothing.

After several failed attempts I decided to have one final look before admitting defeat and taking to the local garage to investigate.

After running the engine up to temperature and thoroughly checking under the car again i found a damp patch around what I've since found out is described as an "Engine Cover Plate"

Position 15. Part number - 996-101-216-51. Lid
Position 16. Part number - 996-101-336-50. Gasket

This has a gasket behind, which if the culprit will need replacing.

However, before I go steaming ahead and drain the coolant and remove the plate, I wondered whether anyone else had experienced the same failure and/or confirm this is actually a plate covering a water way?

What is the cover for? Is it an inspection plate?

Hopefully attachments come out ok.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tim,

The coolant expansion tank is often the cause with a tiny imperceptible hole at the bottom. Very hard to find. Try having a look at the tank while the engine is running and see if it’s coming from there and leaking elsewhere making you think it’s from elsewhere.

What part number does your tank have? As the later ones tended to cure the leak.

Hi Rodney,

Thanks for coming back to me.
I have checked the expansion tank and couldn't find anything. Although this wasn't with the engine running, so perhaps I double check that.
The fluid staining around the cover plate is a long way from the tank and certainly couldn't see a trail of fluid going back in the direction of the tank.
Do know if the plate is covering a water way?
Its an 04 car so believe the part number for the tank would be 996.106.157.03.
Do you know if the part number on the tank is visible from the engine bay?
