Porsche 997

Good Afternoon,

I'm on the look out for a 997. This will be my first 911.

i am currently looking for a 997.3.6 i understand this is the ideal first 911 and the engine issues re. bore scoring / main bearing does not affect this model?

looking to spend Approx 18-20

I feel i should be looking at dealers , but the private sales just seem like the car comes with allot knowledge . And the backgrounds of the cars are well known

The 3.8 could also be an option but worried about re-build costs

The manual /tip box is also something i need to consider , the car will be a weekend type car

if anyone knows of anything for sale ?

many thanks

When looking for a car its very difficult no matter what brand your looking at, in my experience every time I've thought about buying a Porsche there always seams to be one negative story for every positive one. When I was looking for my 924/ I read articles on timing belts and issues that would cause the engine to fail :(, when I was looking for a classic 911, I read articles on the 2.7 engine/ magnesium block which made my toes curl :( However I have owned both and loved them :)

I currently own a Gen1 997 Carrera S (Sally -they have to have names, that's the key) and again before purchase I read article after article regarding issues with these cars and tales regarding IMS/ RMS and other horror stories. But don't let this put you off, yes there are bad cars out there, but in my experience its best to go and look- test drive -get a feel, sure do your home work know what to look for but don't let it put you off keeping your options open. Like buying a house - you sort of know when you see it - there are plenty of really nice friendly dealers / people who are more than happy to let you look and take your time over your purchase.

Focus on the positives, enjoy your purchase experience, ask yourself what do you really want? not what you have read you should have! , be a little open minded, take your time, and get out there and look. that would be my advise:)

Hi,
I'm in the same boat as Marc. I have a 997 gen1 I frightened myself reading all the negative internet posts to the point if obsession. However, I found the car I liked had the spec I wanted and have never looked back its fantastic. The only thing I do is keep the revs below 3000 until the oil and water temp is up, radiators clean and oil change every 12 months something I do on all my cars.
