Porsche are good - and the 944 is no exception

Hi everyone in the 944 area. I have just spent last weekend (8/9th September) racing a 944 turbo at Silverstone (not in the 24 hours - although there was a 944 and you will be glad to hear it finished!).

This car has just had the engine rebuilt by ProMax and we were out in the dual Open/Club Breakfast Race! Although it started at the bizarre hour of 9.00 am it was a fantastic race and although I have done 3 Britcar races earlier in the year (not in this car) I enjoyed this more. The racing and driving standards were excellent. I can't help thinking someone was "having a larff" by putting 50 odd Porsches out to race at this time.

However, just to say I will be taking it to Oulton and again to Croft in the next two weeks so any 944 drivers are very welcome to pop over and have a chat; there is plenty for us to learn from you guys, I'm sure!

Mixing it with a 993 GT2, 964 RSR and 996 turbo certainly was huge fun even if I did eventually have to give best to them around the GP circuit. Oulton Park may be a little different....

Not bad for a 20 year old car costing about 1/10th of their price!

Always good to hear about people using these cars in anger. Any pics and details of the car and how it drives? How far off the pace from more modern, expensive and faster equipment were you?

Cheers.

I am just getting a few pics from my camera - but none in anger; I rely on others for that! I will post them as soon as I get time.

When I first drove it; it was a beast, with a lot of power oversteer: which kills you for the upcoming straight. Alteration of tyre pressures, damper settings and new tyres (we run Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 245 x 16s) fixed that and it is now competitive. I was dicing with the slower Class 1 & 2 cars and I am in Class 3. I finished second in class. Lap times were only 1 sec/lap slower than the class winner. Obviously, if I can make up that 1 sec I will be able to challenge for the Class lead.

Yes, what mods have you done and what sort of boost/power is it running? What year model?

Mods are not done by me; it has been a race car for probably 8 years. It has full welded in cage, seam-welded shell, s/s strut brace, M030 suspension, 968 ( I think) brakes with ceramic pads, two way adjustable shocks, very low ride height, adjustable HD antiroll bars. Engine is still 2.5 but bigger turbo, induction kit, re-mapped ECU, 3"" exhaust, race clutch, lightened flywheel etc. GRP front wings, lexan rear window.

I am not sure of the exact power, as the class is regulated by the power to weight ratio to try and give us older cars a fair chance, but it is somewhere around 310 bhp at 1.1bar. Torque and usable rev band were the main areas concentrated on because of the above- mentioned regs.

I believe its a 1986, I will check the chassis number.

Oulton is this Saturday (16th Sept) and one of the Titanic regulars Sean Dunne is bringing his 944T race car over with the Irish Porsche Championship, they are sharing the grid with the PCGB Open race.

I think it would be a good excuse for the Register (and us wannabe race drivers) to go visit the real 944 racers [:D]

Great Weekend. A few people came and said hello but no one mentioned the Porsche forum.

Here are a few photos - anyone got any action ones?

Anyone coming to Croft this weekend?

Saturday 20 min race is promised but not yet scheduled, Sunday one-hour endurance race with a driver change. All Porsche Open competitors will have pit garages and you are welcome to come and browse the cars/ have a chat. This is similar to next years format for Britcar so should make an exciting event.

Lets just hope our "sprint car" can do the full one-hour OK....

Nice pics Jerry, I do love looking at race car versions of my own car [:D]

How did the race itself go? I see from the MSDPCGB.co.uk website that you came second in class - well done [:)]

Thanks.

It is my second race with the car, and I loved it!

At the start I got way too much wheelspin and was overtaken by several cars ; so I spent a few laps regaining these places and at least one more, before catching a Carrera RS (not sure which engine - hope for his sake it wasn't a 2.7!) which blew something giving clouds of smoke on right handers from the LH exhaust. I nearly came unstuck at Lodge, then Old Hall when right behind him as I was totally blinded by it. However, I passed him after Cascades but I had lost a lot of time so the last 3 laps were pretty lonely. Great car, great circuit.

Thought you may like to see this (or not):

Actually it was only a small hose - no harm done (this wasn't the same car).
