Porsche Cayman 2.7 blue smoke on start up

Hello I've just bought a Porsche Cayman 2.7 2007, and on start up I've noticed a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust, is this normal, or should I be worried , thanks, Billy

If it did it every time it started I would be worried. My 2.7 does it now and again after it has been sitting for a while which is perfectly normal. I take it your oil level is normal and you don't have to top it up often ?

My 2.9 does it from time to time, rarely in public thankfully. I've not been able to identify a particular pattern to it but I've sometimes experienced it when the car has been started and stopped without allowing it to warm up and switch off the "choke", and also when it has been parked on a slope. It hasn't used any oil in over 6k miles so I'm not worried by it but it can be a bit embarrasing and disconcerting to others if it does it in public.

I'd keep an eye on the oil level.

Understandable if you park at an angle sideways since oil may then sit in the bores of one bank of cylinders, nose up or down is better but few of us have total control on the place we regularly park in. Otherwise the occasional smoke when cold starting should clear in just a few seconds.

My 2007 2.7 does it too. Particularly cold mornings, if left a while, or the day after started and stopped/ shuffled on drive, and my drive is on a slight slope. The oil level doesn't really drop- but was a little alarming first few times!

Hi

I had the same issue early on with my previous Gen 1 3.4S, I actually videoed the smokey startup and sent it to Reading OPC, talked it through with the service team who said "so long as it is occasional then its normal for many flat six Porsches, you should see the GT3 when that starts up it fills the showroom" The explanation I was given was it's believed to be due to the position of the oil scrapper ring, if the gap in the ring in on the lowest point of the piston edge then oil can seep in and hence smoke on start up, which seemed reasonable. I did 35K in that car over four years with no problems and minimal oil consumption, just gained a few grey hairs worrying about bore scoring etc.

Thanks for that Mike, it's always been in my mind that the position of piston ring gaps could explain the random nature of smokey startups.
