Porsche CD-R 32 MOST or analogue? So confusing!!

The display on my CD-R 32 is close to unreadable, so I am considering my options. when researching, I have read that the CDR 32 fitted indicates that the car has a MOST optical system fitted, however, the car is a 2001 and other articles claim that MOST systems were only introduced in 2003?!? How can I tell? I would like to restore the standard head unit to preserve originality but fit a subtle modern unit so that I can use Bluetooth and my iPhone (I will
keep the restored CD-R 32 so that it Can be reinstated in the future) does anyone have experience of doing this and do I have MOST!!
Many thanks,
Charles.

Being a 2001 car, it is analogue. MOST was introduced for MY2003. The numbering system is a bit confusing. The CDR22 and CDR32 are analogue, the CDR23 and CDR24 (9x7) are MOST.

That’s great news. Could anyone suggest a subtle Bluetooth head unit that looks in keeping with the car? I don’t want to fit a nightclub!

Becker used to make other units that fitted in really well in a 996, and were even available as options. Sadly they stopped supplying aftermarket stereos, and the price of second hand units rocketed.

Blaupunkt do some head units that are relatively sober looking. I have an older model BT Toronto in my 911 and it looks reasonably at home in a 1989 car. It would probably fit in fairly well in a 996. You can adjust the colour of the backlighting on mine, to tone it down a bit.

I'm sure others will chime in with recommendations too.

Many thanks for your help. I am going to a car audio company in Oxford next week to have a look at head units. I think it will be a far cheaper trip now that MOST is out of the running!

If you have the Harman amplifier (M490) there is a minor wiring change required, but otherwise it will be a very straightforward fit. The M490 amp needs a switched 'wake-up' signal otherwise it doesn't switch on. Most people connect it to the aerial power output from the head unit, so it is only working when the radio is switched on. If you need any details about that, drop me a personal message with your email address.
