Check out the new Porsche Classic Nav Head unit. Seems to have been announced today. Various articles if you Google it!
Looks pretty cool.

It's a classic example of form over function. It's perfect for your passenger to look at and marvel at.

But for helping the driver navigate whilst driving, the screen is too small, and in the wrong place. So it's not.

Porsche trying to make money out of 'classic' owners? Similar to the 10w60 oil fiasco? Never!! :)

I'd tend to agree.

A 'classic' Porsche always looks most authentic with the correct period radio/stereo head, IMO.

To navigate, I'd rather fit a portable unit in a location I can see whilst driving.

The CDR 21 is very neat. Are they still available or is that an EBay Job!!

My 993 has a Sony radio cassette with cd auto changer which is in the glove compartment. It all works fine however for some strange reason I hanker about getting the glove compartment back!!

Sonys were a dealer fit option, but do look a bit fiddly IMO - the 'Becker' models were fitted to the later 993s. The CDR-21s are available s/h, and do come up on eBay, but getting sought after so expect to pay £3-600!

There's also a 'navigation' version, but very early technology.

The slightly later CDR 21 & 22 models, as fitted to gen 1 986s and 996s, are better value, but the screens are less easy to read in a 993 as they tilt up slightly, although there is a mod to adjust this.

i might have been interested in this head unit when i first got my car - mine came with a nasty Sony unit which I'm sure was fitted fairly early in the cars life, but really didn't fit in with the dash. i did the eBay trawl and managed to get a becker cascade dating from around the cars era which imo fits in really well with the dash. The bluetooth phone feature is really good on the becker and I'm sure it'll be good on the new porsche unit, but as per previous comments the gps is really not much use with a small screen and being low down in the dash. It really can be quite dangerous to use, so i would also agree that in dash gps isn't worth bothering with.

Best to search on google or talk to Becker. it's a widely known mod but I've never explored it.

Ridiculous place for any navigation system - I like the original Sony unit with mine, works lovely (best for long holiday journeys[:)]).
Goes with the cassette holder... it's "˜of the time'[;)]
