Porsche Classic radio navigation system

Hi Chaps(esses)

My old Becker CD/Radio was getting confused so decided to get OPC Cardiff to fit a Porsche Classic radio navigation system with TMC and Handsfree Bluetooth - 91164519100. ++ See This Page ++. It's the one with the optional Porsche logo.

I wanted something that looked subtle and period-ish, and this new Porsche unit fitted the bill - looks, strangely for me, were more important than performance.

The sound is pretty good - better than the old Becker and has all the new stuff including DVD, USB, SD Card, iPod jack socket - and, of course, satnav and handsfree.

Hmmm - satnav. A small touch screen (obviously) but it's OK. And it mounts a little proud. Directions are clearly indicated but the jouneys are a little amusing. Like with other satnavs, I only use them when I'm close to my destination - although if I've got plenty of time and want a laugh, I follow them religiously - I've taken some fabulous and unnecessary routes with this new one. It's not possible to enter a full postcode but I hope a new version of the software will fix this. It also comes with TMC -Traffic Management Channel but I haven't played with this - no signal, apparently.

I haven't played with the handsfree much. I don't like talking when driving.

OPC Cardiff told me that they had fitted several of these units - but only to 993's. Has anyone else had one fitted?

Yes, fitted one in mine, I think it does all things very well, not super great but good enough for me. I love the SD card & the handsfree, dont use the satnav too much but it seems OK, I kept the Nokia amp so sound is pretty good. Still prefer the window open and engine sound with a full sports exhaust mind!

I looked at one fitted to an early car and a number of things struck me, It looks cheap in fit and finish ,like it was made out of cheap plastic, the fact that the front wont drop down if you mount into the recess as the original unit would have been was the biggest problem. When fitted the only way it can, it appears as if it's protruding from the dash and this does not look correct to me. So when choosing an upgrade for my own c2 I opted to get an old Becker cascade type unit which does fully recess into the hole, and it does look factory whilst providing hands-free phone ,navigation , and music from various sources like memory card. It's a shame that Porsche didn't commission a well known manufacturer to design something really good as I'm sure there market research shows that us classic owners love to spend some money on our hobbies? This is just one of several Porsche sanctioned products that do not quite measure up to old Porsche standards. This is the unit that i fitted.......... Christian........................

I have to agree the NEW "classic" appearance doesn't look quite right.

Looks great to me but clearly not to everyone's taste !!

You pays your money........... TBH I think Porsche have marketed this at slightly earlier cars than the 964/993

I looked at the Becker, saw one and thought no. Not for that money. I looked other alternatives, all made on a shoe string and priced as a premium item. Looked at the Porsche unit and thought, absolutely no, not for that money and it is not 100%. Sticks out and is a half way house from any other unit out there. Decided on the following: http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/25/121/61/DEX-P99RS/page.html Does what it says on the tin, no, not cheap, but worth every penny. Fits in visually, doesn't have a cheap feel anywhere and as for a SAT NAV, I use a SAT NAV. Job done.
