Porsche dash cam useful info

On my new 992.2GTS I purchased the front and rear car dash cam option and decided fit it myself rather than pay over £500 to have it fitted. The new cars now come with the prewired option, although you still have to purchase the harnesses for both cameras and remove some facias to locate the connectors. It is a bit fiddly to fit but there are good informations available on the web. After fitting you still have to go into dealer mode to set up the camera for the type of battery for the car and the duration the radar is on, maximum 1 hour. I struggled a bit to find how to go into dealer mode for the camera.

To activate dealer mode:
Remove SD card
Plug camera backing the mount after removing it it.
Hold the power button down until you hear two audible beeps.
Both lights will come on the read and the yellow
Connect to your Dashcam using a lap top or iPad using the WIFI on 324B6D or similar
Type in 192.168.1.1/diagnostics on your browser, and bingo you, just follow then the instructions on the screen.

During normal operation and trying to access the camera files from the Dashcam software on your phone, disable bluetooth on your phone ,otherwise the software keeps trying to connect to the car internal Porsche network due to apple car play.

Thanks for giving us this information Huw, could be very useful for us all to save the dealership fitting costs, and also assist transferring the dash cam from a current to a future car and saving 2 x dealership costs. (removing and fitting). 👍😀

My pleasure, I have a full set of photos I took of the installation. This only applies to the pre wired installation.

Has anyone had experience with the FIXCAMX Dash Cameras?

They seem to fit unobtrusively into the rear mirror and overhead console areas.

It looks as if the wiring is an inline piggy back into the connector which is already in place.

The question still is how would the OPC’s view the modification.

There is a YouTube video here

And it only £161..

I have a Viofo A129 Pro in my 718 and plug it into the 12v socket under the dash. Very discreet and you can't see it as it's hidden behind the rear view mirror.

Re wiring in, as long as you're not splicing wires then i would assume the waranty would be fine.

Hi David

Looking at the video for the FIXCAM X , although it is smaller than the Porsche dash cam. When the Porsche dash cam is mounted high up on the windscreen, and not the much lower position they quote in the installation manual the rear drive mirror hides the majority of the unit. The FixCAM camera splices into an available power source in the above panel such as the rain sensor camera. It does not use the Porsche pre wired harness. If there was a need to install a rear view camera, an additional cable will have to be run in. The Porsche pre wired harness is already installed in the C pillar. Also I am not sure where you stand with the warranty, replacing the front housing with the camera.

Hi Huw,

Thanks for the comments, I know you have recently installed the Porsche unit in your new GTS, was it very difficult to ‘plug in’ the wiring of the unit to the ‘pre wired’ part of the car?

I just think the OPC charging £500 ish for the task seems quite high, especially when Porsche state ‘including pre wiring for the dash cam’.

Any suggestions welcome.

Kind Regards David

It was a bit fiddly David, if you do go along to fit it your self just contact me for any guidance. You will have to purchase a harness for the front and rear which will be specific to your car. The Porsche centre keep a variety of them for different Porsche models. They cost about £40, put pressure on them you might get them free like I did.
