Porsche Day - feedback

Had a spectacular day on Friday with 3 other would be Porsche owners (only one using my actual car). Went to Milbrook and did the following:
1- Alpine track: scary stuff, out of say 20 bends, all but 2 are blinds, and we are talking about the mountain on one side, barriers on the other, going up down left right. There is no need for a roller coaster after this one
2- 1km flat high speed and emergency braking: scary stuff going to 150 after staying in 3rd on the alpine track. It is not the speed per say, it is looking at the end of the straight and wondering, and wondering and still wondering when it is that the lunatic instructor will say BRAKE! Actually he gives you plenty of warning time, but I had no idea. Emergency stop means stopping the car in half the time it takes to accelerate to that given speed. Emergency stop at 30 for example is only 1 car length [], if you do not have you seatbelt on you will definitely kiss the flies on the windscreen
3- High speed bowl, got up to 140 until I was told 130 was the max without helmet. This is never raking when you start reaching of say 120, the car needs to be kept in line unless you want to fly off, anything slower and you are really fine
4- country lane driving: the kind of thing we loose our licences over, but in this case the instructor was drifting the car at every corner, fat chance of me even trying this in my own car with real posts next to the road
5- last but not least, skipan where we aimed off centre at 50, taking the foot of the accelerator and turing the steering wheel. We repeated that taking all aids off 1 at a time, until of course I completely spun when nothing was interfering with my lack of skills [&:]

All in all a fantastic day! Everybody should do it when they buy a Porsche, the handling, transfer of weight, braking and electronic aids need to be felt to be believed. Unreal what my Carrera S can do.

[:)] Was this the free "porsche driving experience" for new owners, or did you pay? I purchased my new 997 C4S at the beginning of November and was told by my OPC that I would be receiving an invite for the "driving experience" within weeks - but Porsche Cars GB have not been in touch some 7 weeks later.

If yours was the freebie then I will chase Porsche Cars GB - even if I have to drive down to Millbrook (and then use their car???).

Cheers

Keith

It is a freebie for new cars although since I purchased my car 2nd hand I actually paid for it: £350 with your own car, £550 to use theirs. I would council to use your own, what is the point otherwise? They are trying to do this for people who just put down their deposit, in order to better specify their cars as they bring a range of them. So all in all CHASE THEM UP!

Many thanks for the clarification. I will certainly chase them up...... I had naively thought this was a thank you from Porsche for staying with them rather than moving to the new AMV8 !!!!

Keith

Hi John,
I have recently ordered a c4s from OPC Glasgow, from your post it seems that you are saying that PGB are trying to get people to do depositor days who have just payed their initial deposit . At a recent extended Cayenne test drive <my wife is keen on getting a Cayenne>we were told the same thing by Barry Horne the Porsche racing meister. When I questioned my OPC salesman he said he would get back to me- that was 3 weeks ago. If the point of these days is to allow people to get a better idea of spec then that's going to be of little use to me since I have to spec my car by the 23rd dec.

This picture is confusing. However if you are councilling people to take their own car then maybe the OPC'S lack of clarity isa blessing in disguise as I will get to use my own car.

Wonder what it will take out of the tyres - och well who cares
Cheers!

Dave

What the Porsche people told me is that they are trying to extend this exercise to the whole Porsche range, instead of the Turbo, GT2 and GT3 previously, 997 now. The exercise is either to bring your own car, or more to the point get you to choose options BEFORE you actually have your own options set in stone. My view is that they are keen on soft selling some of the more expensive stuff such as ceramic brakes and sports adaptive seats for example, nothing like having a good sales pitch and trying things out! So yes, definitely go before the end date for your options, but be prepared to invariably add to these options [:)] or [] depending on whether you use your heart or mind

Back in November, I ordered my C4S for March '06 delivery. In early December I was contacted by Porsche to arrange my driving day for end March 2006.

You should chase your dealer to get this booked in !

Yes, this will be my first Porsche, and only my 4th car !! (I went from a used Vauxhall Corsa 1.5TD LS ('94-99') to new Audi S3 Quattro ('99-03') to new BMW M3 ('03-current) and the new C4S arrives in March.

I've posted another post on here detailing the spec ("My first Porsche...").

My experience is the same regarding the "Porsche Day" (aren't they all?). I collected my 997 2CS (MY06) in glorious Guards Red in mid-October and still have not had any information from Porsche UK. I spoke to OPC Sheffield yesterday and was reassured that it will happen SOON. Actually I'm quite happy to wait for better weather. BTW, I was told when I first heard about this freeebie that I could choose NOT to use my own car. Any more thoughts or experience of this?

Maybe a related point - when we bought our new Boxster S 4 years ago we immediately got a subscription to the free mag Christophorus (spelling?). But I have not yet received an issue. Do others have this? When was the last issue published?

As my car (assuming it arrives in time) will be barely run-in before my Porsche driving day, I have no intention of using my own car.
I think I'll give them a call and confirm that this is possible - I would want to ensure that I was able to use another C4S (given that 's what I've ordered), rather than C2S, to maximise the usefulness of the day.

It may be better to drive when the track is greasy so you get more opportunity to feel the car at its limit, and if you use your own car, don't suffer so much tyre wear [:)].

As for Christophorus, it is bi-monthly, not sure whether the last issue I received was in November or December but I have been receiving issues since I confirmed my order for my car.

Just had my Millbrook day and I have to say it's fantastic ! [:)][:)][:)] Probably the most fun driving I've had in a long time. Format is the same as John's post at the top. My instructor was Steve Smith - what a fantastic guy ! A real professional and capable driver, but not in any way patronising like some instructors I've used before.

My test car, provided by Porsche GB, was a C2S the same as mine, but with Ceramic brakes.

Personally I've done lots of road-craft driving but never any track work, so taking the car on the mile straight to the max, and braking back to zero well within a mile was a revelation. The steering pad I've done similar before, but it's amazing how much grip and balance the car has, even when PSM is off. I was expecting to lose the back-end on violent lift off, but you really need to be going very hard and very savage with the controls to get it to spin - it's certainly made me feel happier in the car, though obviously this is different to on-the-road with ice and diesel and whatever else on the tarmac.

But the best for me was the alpine route. Steve's drive was amazing, I couldn't believe the capabilities of the car, the sheer grip and grunt. What was also impressive is that Steve could drive so hard but the PSM never flashed once ! After my runs at what must have been half the speed, Steve was coaching me to left-foot brake, to the point where I could drive the whole circuit in third with just the left-foot over the middle pedal.

It really was a fantastic day that I'd recommend to everyone, to really understand the capabilities of the car. It's made me love my car even more, if that's possible !

Oh and the ceramic brakes, I could really feel the difference in the steering. Thank heavens I'm not specifying a new one, as I would have bought them ![;)]

The driving experience is open to anyone over 21 and without certain endorsements on the licence. The cost is £350 to use your own Porsche or £550 to use one of their cars. It is being offered to customers who have ordered a car and paid the deposit, but supposedly before deciding final spec, as the goal is surely to experience the fully-loaded demo cars and spend even more. You get to drive the exact same model as you've ordered, i.e. C2S or C4 etc, and the idea is also to try a different model to encourage you to help you buy an upgraded car...!

Robert (Poole)

I think the delays are due to your OPC (I had similar problems with Leeds - same franchise).

Have today received my invitation following a number of calls to the "Driving Experience" number rather than by chasing the OPC. If you have no success with Sheffield, try my approach (my C4S arrived in early November).

Keith

My email to my OPC on the subject and their reply:

Mr Avenell

The Driving Experience is managed by Porsche Events and the whole
process is triggered by the registration of the new Porsche.
However as you are in a position to offer us a preference regarding
dates I have contacted the Event team and have forwarded your details to
them, you should now receive an invitation and upon doing so can contact
the Events team to arrange a convenient date in May.

Mr Davies

I have been in contact with other members of the PCGB and I understand
that
I should be invited to a day at Millbrook to drive my new 997 C4S under
various conditions. Is the date organised through Swindon OPC or Porsche
GB?
If the former, please let me know of some suitable dates (starting in
May,
given that the build month if February) or the full contact details, if
the
latter.
Kind regards,
Derek

They do not say that its free, but this is implied. Hope this helps. Derek

Rob, as you know I have just booked a PDE now apparently at MIRA , and as I purchased my car in 2004 I am having to pay. Cost now £650.00 plus £400 to use one of their 911's. I am planning to use my car! Let us know if there is a way to get this at price you mention.

More on the Porsche Driving Experience, just had chat with the most charming Helen at PDE. The Millbrook session only available as part of new car package and not available to buy, a new owner can take a paying guest however, I am only quoting the lady. The more expensive session at MIRA that I have booked takes most of the day and involves more advanced and extreme tuition she tells me.Geared more for the owner who has, supposedly ( my word ) already some porsche experience. Seems just up my street for someone that can get 25k out of a set of rears, might give me chance to find full throttle!!!

Yes Flitwick Manor, GBP 125 per night if you quote "Porsche Driver" 01525 712242, im staying there end of March when I do my PDE
