Porsche Design Classic Radio/Nav System

I've just seen an advert - in Porsche Post - for a radio and navigation system that can be fitted to classic Porsches. It has 3.5" screen, bluetooth handsfree kit, DVD/CD and is fitted by OPCs for about £800.

I have a 993 and am getting fed up with the power cable to my Garmin becoming disconnected from the cigarette lighter socket. The kit looks sufficiently "retro" - but presumably has 21st century performance?

Does anyone have experience of this kit?

A couple of owners over on 911uk.com have fitted them.

As said here they really aren't meant for cars as late as the 993 so look all wrong IMO. There are also fitment issues in the 993 dash.

I think the 993 is the perfect car for such a device, considering that a 993 has a dash prety much the same as any other classic 911 since day one.
Im also toying with the idea of installing this piece of kit in mine. And it's certainly a lot more tastfull than some of the head unit's ive seen in some 993's at club days.[;)]

i would certainly be interested if it looked ok -any photos would be very welcome chaps

cheers
dylan

I have one in my 993, it fits fine, looks good and works well, and they are £500+vat

Sorry but after seeing the fitted pics in a couple of 993's I stand by my comments. I do agree the more flashy modern units look out of place, however this particular HU is a step too far back in time. Becker were/are the best match for the 90's cars IMO.

Also agree with the comments regarding modern head units but I'll stick with my original Bremen for music and a Garmin stuck to my screen when I don't know where I'm going

I've just had my car out for the first decent drive of 2011 with my old Garmin stuck on the screen. I've decided to forget this particular Porsche satnav offering and maybe go for a modern portable unit which I can transfer between cars. From a cost point of view, you really can get a great Garmin/Navigon/Tomtom, with 5" screen for <£250, which is less than half the cost of the Porsche kit and much more capable.

However, my thanks to everybody for their responses.

The replacement cd head unit installed in mine by Porsche Sussex a few years ago is a flashy Sony thing with continuously scrolling graphics
I've always hated it and regretted not checking first that it would be a NOS unit
This old school unit looks quite good I think. Where can I get one ?

What bothers me on this Classic Radio is that the display sticks out of the dashboard by +/-10mm.
Just like it doesn't fit properly.[:'(]

Being an all singing all dancing nav unit, it may actually be too deep to sit flush. I had a Becker Online Pro in my C4 and the fitters had to remove some plastic trunking that distributes air into the footwell to make that sit fully back into the recess. I agree that it doesn't look very tidy sitting proud of the dash like that.

Sorry to be a bit late to the thread, but i recently installed a Becker cascade pro (7941) and I think it is a reasonable balance of OEM look, good fit (maybe sticks out by 1-2mm Max because I didn't want to start cutting/modifying the dash opening) and good function. I think these units were expensive when first available but I was lucky to find an immaculate second hand unit about a year ago.

Can take some pics and post if anyone is (still!) interested...

I looked at the NEW Porsche SatNavi-radio which is basically a Becker without the extras and without the compatible styling and yes, it sticks out. Also Beckers are only available on the second hand market and I found too many places offering repairs. I have been without artificial sound for months, looked in earnest for a replacement to my broken after market hifi. Decided that logic was the best approach and to screw faffing about with nonsense. So getting one of these instead:

I have to buy an amp & upgrade the speakers, but the sound should be beautiful. I will then invest in a grown up SatNavi that does not pretend to be something else, doesn't cost a fortune to update and fits in with life the world and everything.

Bought the unit yesterday, installed by the chaps at the shop plus the amp. Have to make a return visit for the installation of the sound damping mats and upgraded speakers and cables. It is all costing a small fortune, but I can feel and hear the difference already. Visually it fits in nicely too. Display is a little hard to see with the sun behind you, but once I have played with the light settings I am hoping that issue would be solved. - Made me smile when I plugged my USB stick into the connector in the glove compartment and there it was, on the selection panel all ready to go. & The quality of the sound is beautiful. I feel like it's my Birthday. ;-)
...a very happy chap today.

Hi - do you mind telling me who you used for the install ? I work in london/live in Surrey and am looking for a company to install a new stereo in my 993.

Thanks!

I am based in Germany now and so used these people:

In England I have always used a chap called Karl. He knows the 993 inside and out, knows his in-car Hifi stuff and will do a great job. "In Car Electrics" his telephone number is 07980 983616. He is mobile and so you can perhaps arrange an appointment. He will know how long the piece of string is with regards to installation and costs with no faffing about.
