Going to this day offered for new owners next month near Luton. I was given the name Richard Attwood, whom I understand will be my instructor, did some research and found out he was F1+ Le Mans!!! Anyone with experience of these days, what exactly have I signed up to and how good is it?

Jag, If you look back over the last 90 days you will see a couple of threads on driving experience day which will give you some idea on what it is like. I did it recently fantastic fun and not to be missed. Dickie is very laid back but can still drive like a god despite the passing years. Fast, silky smooth and in a different league to most of us.

Hi Jag,

I have just done the Porsche Driving Experience at Millbrook. Having done Test Drive +, Track days, Boxster at Bedford, & the IOM TT, I can safely say that this was the best day ever. I will be writing a 1-2 page article for Porsche Post, but if you want to know more, call me: 01367850002

It is well worth it.
You get out of it what you put into it.
If you approach it with an open mind, listen to what they say and try to do it, plus ask lots of questions, you will learn a lot.
You can of course tell them to keep quiet and do your own thing, but that would be a wasted opportunity.
I had 5 minutes just on how to get the seating position right. It is a bit disconcerting to discover you can't even sit in the thing correctly.
Whilst it was a bit demoralising to be told that almost everything I was doing was either not very good, or wrong, (and I thought I was OK), I learnt a lot. I have been practising it all for the last 15 months, and am now much better than I was and have almost got rid of my bad habits.
I asked them to be hard on me though.
They ask you want to get out of it - my answer was I wanted to not be afraid of the car and be able to use the performance without endangering myself.
The key is smoothness - which is easy to say and hard to do. They also make it look much easier than it is.

To answer the actual question:

It usually covers accelerating, i.e. floor it up to 150 or more (depending on car).
You also get to stand on the brakes, feeling for the limit, where the ABS is just about to come in.
You can do this from 100 without touching the wheel. You will appreciate how well it stops.
You can steer and swerve about while braking and the stability control sorts it all out.

You will have some handling session, on a circuit of some sort with a mixture of corners.
In some ways it is better in the wet, since the limit is lower and you can feel the car slide.
If you are smooth and balance it correctly, you can slide and drift the car without the PSM cutting in.

You may also have a high speed bowl (if at Millbrook).

I would like to do it again, to see where I could now do better.
Although it only lasts a few hours, it's probably about as much as you can absorb in one go.

All the instructors are good guys who don't have anything to prove, so you don't need to feel intimidated (which I did at the start).

" Richard Attwood, whom I understand will be my instructor, did some research and found out he was F1+ Le Mans!!!"

He's done a bit John. First Porsche driver to win at Le Mans.......

You need to research Porsche heritage me laddo!!

OK I am really salivating now[:)]. Thanks for all the feedback, checking out past posts, and cannot wait. Will let you know in due course. Derek, thanks for the offer also.

Is this only for purchasers of new Porsche cars?

And as my car has Tip, will it be as worthwhile as with a manual gearbox?

Costs - if not 'included' in purchase cost?

Was included with my TT purchase, but not the C4S.
It was included with the TT, GT2 and GT3 for the 996.

I guess it has changed with the 997 arrival.

The Porsche Driving Experience Level 1 is £550, but is in your own car and more involved.

The driving experience did not used to available separately, although if you know someone who is going you can pay (£400 ish I think) to be a guest and get the same treatment. It is done in one of Porsche GBs cars.

They also seem to be doing some scaled down driving experiences for free at the moment.
They last about 1 hour or so. I did one in a Cayenne a few months ago (I just supplied my name and address) and I know they are doind the same thing for the 997.
Best way to find out what is available, is to ask your OPC.

Even though I did not buy my car new, I phoned Porsche up and they suggested this. I paid £350 using my own car, £550 if not. 16-12-05 is the last date this year, you then go to March I think. I am now chasing up insurance quotes, and it is not looking pretty at all.
