Porsche Inspection Advice

Hi All,

First time on here, I have aquired a porsche 944s and would like to take it to a garage that can provide an inspection and report on the state of the mechanicals and what needs to carried out. Based on this then i can prioritise the work to be undertaken. If anyone knows a good garage that can provide this service in the Northampton area it would be appreciated.

Thanks

I hope you dont mind me asking but why are you getting an inspection 'after' you aquired it , did you get given the car/inherit it or something.

Hi Mas,

Wow thanks for a quick response, well I purchased the car as a project to replace my alfa when completed, I gave it an inspection and test drive and had put through its MOT all seems ok but I would rather be sure. I know there are some basic items to address like brake pads etc.. which I can do but I would be happier if I knew the status of main engine components. Once the mechanicals are sound they car interior will be re-trimmed and the body respayed to bring it back to how it should look. http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/micons/m16.gif

Hi Gareth, and welcome.

I'd suggest RPM in Cheedington, Promax in Brackley or Auto 2000 in Bedford as starting points. All three are Porsche specialists who are enthusiastic about the 944.

If it's a 944S, you particularly need to check out the cam belt, chain and all the associated bits as the belt has a 4 year maximum life (or 48K miles if sooner) and the chain system can need attention.

Hi Paul,

thanks for the reply, yes those are the items I would think may need attention, cam belt, balance belts and feel it is out of my depth. I am not sure if the alternator or water pump needs replacing as the car has a humming/whining from the front but these could be done same time as the belts I believe. I have heard of promax so will give them a ring. the car doesnt seem to have the power I would expect from the 944s engine so could be it needs a good servicing as well as belts.

Gavin

I didn't realise you were within distance of Promax , as Paul knows they definately get my vote as well. They won't be bucket shop cheapest but they won't rip you off either and will do the job properly. [;)]

Are some photos of your car in order ??

Hi Mas,

I think the project will take about 6 months, so when completed I will put up a post on the restoration including pictures how she looks now to how she will look when finished. The most work will be the interior but I am sure it will look good when all done.

I have managed to get the electric sunroof working which the previous owner said was broken :) next little problem to tackle is the central locking, think this is intermitent at times it activates the solinoids and other time it just bleeps. I also need to replace the hatch receivers do you know where I can get these from, managed to find the pins but not the receivers.

Thanks

Gavin

Sounds like you are more mechanically minded than most ( including myself).
As for small parts, there are a few folk on the forums who specialise in breaking as well as repairing 944's and I think you can get just about any small part from them.
Some of these smaller parts are suprisingly cheap from your local OPC too.

I am still trying to pluck up the courage to do what I am dying to do and that's take a 944 to bits piece by piece so I have a whole broken car in one of my garages. The only thing that's stopped me is what do I do with the shell left in my garden [:D]

Always check Porsche Centre first for a price, they are often surprisingly reasonable although sometimes odd things are crazy prices. Plenty of other specialists in the Faqs for new parts as well.

For used parts: Elliot at porkaparts, Simon at Porschapart, Max at Frazerpart, and Alasdair (Sulzeruk on this forum) are all good places for used parts where you stand a decent chance of getting the right part, in decent condition, and advice on anything else you might need at the same time.

Generally, be careful of e-bay. There are decent people on there but often it's someone who doesn't know what the parts are but can put a silly price on them all the same. [&o]

Promax are actually near MK these days rather than Brackley.

MK is near Brackley in my book, but then it's all "oop north" from me and I failed my Geography O-level.....[&o]

Well fairy 'nuff - everything is "West of the Flatlands" in my world ! [:D][;)]
