The 968 wheels which I had put on the car where in excellant condition ( kerbed them twice since but had both redone ) however the Porsche logo in the middle of the alloy is looking a little tired, colours going etc , can these be replaced or can they be repainted ? any ideas, the guy that redid my 2 meetings with the pavement said he coudnt do them.

Cheers
Chris

They can be replaced. They are quite expensive though.

I bought a set of silver centres with the black outline crest on eBay a couple of weeks ago because I think my car looks better without the colour on the wheels. My old centres are far from perfect but I'm going to tart them up (the silver has blistered on mine) and eBay them, hopefully for £60 or so.

Rich on here resurrected his somehow when the badge had faded but I'll let him tell you how as I will get the details wrong no doubt.

I've just bought exactly the same Fen. I have coloured relief crests on mine, worst for wear. My wheels could do with a refurbish (or change) but for the interim brand new polished black outline crests will hopefully disguise the shabby-ness alittle. I have seen them on the same coloured 944 as mine and I think it suits it better.
Just waiting for them to arrive, hopefully they fit. Also, the ones on at the moment don't have any hole in them to take them off but I think I'll drill them as oppose to take each wheel off. Unless I tart them up to pass them on £59.99.(Fen)
Back to the thread, e-bay is probably the best place to look. Plastic ones are quite a bit cheaper, but....

Mine had no holes either. I used the opportunity to take the wheels off, give them a good clean inside and out, touch them up (oo-er) with Humbrol No. 11 (cheers for the tip whoever it was - Andriko?) and then Zymol them inside and out.

They're caked again now, but hopefully they'll come clean easily this time and I think the tidy centres with the loss of the colour they look much better.

This pic is after i refurbed my old 964 centres, my crests were still bright in colour, It was just the alloy surround that was bubbling from the corrosion.
I masked of the crest with masking tape and scraped off the old silver paint, used wet and dry, primed the ally and sprayed it with silver spray paint (V close match) from Halfords, removed the masking from the crest and then sprayed the whole centre with clear laquer.
It looked good afterwards and I saved a fortune not buying more.
This set didnt have the holes either [;)]

Well, £100 any way.

DDT Halfords silver paint
DDT Primer
DDT Masking tape
DDT Lacquer
DDT Labour

Still a good saving, subject to the value you put on your labour per hour.

Rich on here resurrected his somehow when the badge had faded but I'll let him tell you how as I will get the details wrong no doubt.

I got hold of a cheap set of second hand coloured centres last year, all of which were worse for wear, mainly the silver paint was bubling, chipped or just scruffy, and one of the crests had faded from gold to silver. I stripped and repianted all of the silver areas, and they all looked like new again, all it took was some perseverence and about a week or so sanding and spraying in the evenings. The faded one still let the set down though, and some of the other ones had scratches in the gold finish. I did some experimenting with some paint in the garage, but didn't want to just use gold paint as all the others have a gold chrome like finish, and came up with the idea of using varnish!![:D]

Oak stain stain finish varnish turned out to be a pretty good match, and is clear enough to still see throgh to the chrome underneath, and must be similar to how they are produced orignally. It's pretty hard wearing, and haven't noticed any fading, flaking or chipping since I did them about 8 months ago. I haven't got a picture on me but will take one to show how it came out. In all they look pretty good and cost me about £30 including refinishing.

Yeah they look pretty dam good flamingeye, might get some of those instead of cocking up my wheels completely [:D]

OK - just so I don't damage my centres - they do have holes in them, is there a *best* way to remove them?

I have used an old wire coat hanger bent into a large U shape with the ends bent over. A sharp tug and they come straight out. If really tight [] you'll just have to take the wheel off and push from the inside
