Porsche Nav Discs - Look dodgy or ok?

You'd need to make sure you have the update disc also...
If they are copies, then I'm surprised they are allowed on PH...

HI All,

I have seen them before on the 911uk forum and lots of folk in there have gone for it, dont see why it wouldnt work but i can see why you may be cautious.

Why dont we to spread the cost chip in and buy them, i can copy them no probs for you all.

Cheers
Dave

I'm sure the forum wouldn't condone the activity of illegally copying discs [:)]

I was merely asking if the discs in the ad looked genuine and if they could be forged in the first place.

Gary, I've emailed the seller and when he replies, will ask him if he has the update disc too.

Thanks

I bought copied discs twice and they both worked for the 2006 update for my 997 and also for the Merc E class from 2005. No problems whatsoever - I did buy them privately for around £120 on ebay but they were guaranteed to work, which thankfully they did. It sure improved a lot of things especially related to updated traffic information.

Quite correct, which is why I've never mentioned them before [;)]
As a club forum we cannot encourage any illegal activity.. nor am I suggetsing anyone has.

The seller does offer information and the update discs...[;)]
I think the latest mapping disc is 2009- which is actually about 2008 information.

However its more up to date than mine which I think is 2005..
I get more annoyed when I think I'm going to a Shell station and find its not any longer [:(]

Just bought from this chap via ebay he was most helpful gave him my software version and my car details he did all the checking (don't know where) established that the update disk wasn't needed, now I have the latest maps and they work perfectly. I've looked very closely at the supplied disk it doesn't look like a fake or a cheap copy the laser printing is indistinguishable from my old disk. Don't know how he does it for the price but i'm happy with the result. (2005 997 C2S 3.8 Chrono silver)

Second thoughts I've had another look at my disk and it is a copy the date on my disk is 08 2009 which is the latest disk, now my house was built in 2001 and it is not on my old (original) disk, it is not on the new disk either which it should be (8yrs should be long enough to get a new address added). I am now doubting just what version of software I have bought, going to make some enquiries with Porsche to make sure I have the latest version and he's not pulled a fast one on me...

Jimbo,

Here's a suggestion as to how you can tell.....

On the Porsche page, it states that 5 new countries have been added for the new 2010 update Nav disc, which weren't present before. (Macedonia, Bosnia Hercegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Belarus)
Try typing an address in say Serbia and see if it will find it.

Let us know how you get on [:)]

Thanks Hasan I gave it a try and all of those countries are on my £75 disk so I've obviously got the latest version.
Went into my local Porsche dealer today and had a play with a brand new 997, I tried to type in my own address which it did not recognise, I tried to type in another address, a street that I know did not exist 8 years ago as all the houses and the street were built about 7 years ago and guess what, the system did not recognise the street!
The sales person was stuttering and stammering and in the end was just open mouthed when I pointed out that they would be quite willing to take 450 quid of my money and supply me with a current disk whose data I had just proved was at least 7 years out of date!
On reflection, I'm happy to pay £75 to have the latest version but I certainly would not advise forking out £450 and going to a main dealer as the 2009 disk is NOT £450 quid better than the 2005 disk. I might be being a little naive in expecting for that kind of money I would want data that is up to date.
Hope this helps..

Thanks for letting us know Jimbo.
I suppose there will always be a small percentage of roads that get missed off the latest updates.

Look on the bright side, atleast you'll never get lost if you happen to drive through Eastern Europe!

I still think the new disc is worth buying, but the official route is very pricy and the unofficial is tempting.
