Porsche new 4 pot turbo

Just been reading some interesting news about Porsche/VW may enter engines in the 2013 FI.
Apprantly F1 regulations are changing for 2013, the new engines will be a 4 pot turbo.

You've probably seen photos of the VW Bluesport that people are saying will be the new baby Boxster with a 4 pot turbo engine. This got me thinking is this going to be a rebirth of the 924 a Porsche fettled VW engine in a Porsche?

As engine swaps into the 924/44 are rare due to the fact that not many engines fit, produce more power and are as reliable as a 944 turbo lump. So who up for a light weight 924 with a modern Porsche turbo engine?

Slight detour I know but does that look like a big brother to the MR2 Roadster [8|]

I'd certainly take one for a spin [:D]

There has been some rumours for some time about putting a 2ltr turbo 4-pot VW engine out of the Golf GTI / Audi S3 into a Boxster as an entry level Boxster. With the possibility of tuning to gain big HP out of this unit though it would probably end up embarrassing the more expensive 6-pot cars - however the heavier lump with higher C of G will certainly adversely affect the Boxsters dynamics. Given the drive to more efficient cars then lighter, smaller and more compact with turbocharging is the way to go.

The engine could be heavily canted over to get the C of G down. Similar thing done on many front wheel drive cars in the past.

There is also some talk that the Porsche version of this will havea flat-four to distinguish it from the Audi and VW versions. I hope it does.

Happy with the VW/Porsche, 4 pot, 2 litre turbo soon to be pushing North of 200bhp I have already, thanks!!

You do, and from the discussion that kicked off last week on this subject it seems like the bottom end of your engine is pretty much the same as the bottom end in the current Golf GTi engine producing 198bhp. So 30yrs of VAG development incorporating 5 valves per cylinder, direct injection, modern ECU's don't seem to have moved the game on much compared to the Porsche fettled engine in the 924 turbo!!

PLEASE let them do it right and develop the 20v 5cylinder turbo this time round!! Pretty pretty please with sugar on top!

p.s. that 2.0 engine in the outgoing S3 is a gem though! Anyone who has not driven one with a chip I highly recommend the experience. If it wasn't such an ugly looking car I would be driving one. My GOD can it cover ground for a hot hatch!

They will develop a 1.6 16v, the S3 like the golf GTI has a 16v head (FSI) not 20v the old S3 and mk4 Golf had the 20v. I have driven the old S3 a fair bit and to be honest the most fun I had in it was when it's 4 wheel deive system broke and it was just running FWD!

The interesting thing is, would it be called or follow the 924 name or a 912 ?? or even a 914?

In line with Porsche history.. I am sure the marketing boys will be calling it a 911 for sales!![:(]
