Hello All,

Never owned a 911, and now's the time to put that right. I've read and lurked on various forums for quite a while trying to learn as much as possible about the car and the pitfalls / potential problems. I've got £22,000 to spend on a car which would be a second vehicle and have been looking long at hard at every advertisement I can find, but nothing has jumped out at me yet, could any of you kind ladies and gentlemen point me in the direction of a car worth considering ? I'm based in Shropshire.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark - I would go and visit a few cars to get a feel of what you want; Gen1 / Gen2, manual/tip, Cab, C2/C4/C4S, options etc. Best places to start are local indies or you may even find a OPC selling one. Until you drive them, it's then you realise the potential of the 996.

Definitely get out and drive one or two. Everyone has their favourites whether it be manual or tiptronic, 2 or 4 wheel drive but only you can decide. And independents have a lot to choose from. Took me awhile to find mine but worth the leg work on the internet and on the roads visiting them.

Happy hunting

Thanks for replies gentlemen. There is a couple of cars local to me at dealers ( not Porsche specialists ) that I'm going to look at in the morning and there is a local Porsche Indie that I'll ask to look over for me if I they press my buttons, not sure if it's a service they do but I can ask.

Here's one of the cars, it's a 2 but has PSM, which I'd come to the conclusion was a decent combination if I didn't go for the 4. Any thoughts on this 911 ?

Hello All,

Sorry, I'm going to have to break rank, I've agreed to buy a 997.1 Carrera S.

2005, 68,000, FSH, one owner car, Artic Silver. Local Indie has prodded at it for me and hi-lighted a weeping RMS and leak from n/s drive shaft. Price negotiated to take into account putting these items right. Car has had a recent clutch, so should be okay, the IMS bearing will be inspected and a decision made dependant on it's condition. Collection on Saturday [:D]

Difficult to inspect the IMS without extracting it, then you may as well replace it. I would have thought RMS (or even the IMS housing) would have new seals if they were weeping, if the clutch was recently changed. Be wary of quick fixes just to sell them on... Good luck with your purchase though.

Thanks for reply. The RMS is going to be replaced with the latest version, IMS will probably also be replaced, transmission needs to be dropped first so Indie can see which version of IMS I have, later 2005 cars have different IMS....apparently. Indie wasn't surprised to see oil weeping around RMS on car of that age, so I have to trust his judgement in that it's a nice car, hopefully.

If car has had a recent clutch, why was RMS dealt with then?
Seals are only circa 20 quid for the sake of dropping gearbox again!!

Recent clutch as in 3,000 miles, 2 years ago. The car has only done 9,000 miles in last 5 years. Cost for RMS replacement was negotiated in purchase price. Maybe there was no oil weep when clutch was replaced. Hopefully all will be sorted, soon.
