I've just completed a 1400 mile trouble free round trip in my 1989 944 S2 from London to Meribel in the French alps and managed to not spot a single 924,944,928 or 968. I did however see numerous Citroens, Peugeots & Renaults.

yes .. it is still there. didn't make it there myself, but did here moans of 5 euros for a bottle of water.

"Happy" as in aching afternoons following a stiffening up over lunch...

It was a bit pricey a few years ago, too. I didn't ever find out what the water cost, though [:D]

"Happy" as in aching afternoons following a stiffening up over lunch...

True, but after 8 lagers a few Schnapps and the odd mulled wine the pain was numbed a little.

Sounds like Dick's Tea Bar in Val D'isair (spelling!). That place had an escallating price scale. About £2.50 a pint before 10:30pm then £3.50 a pint upto midnight then £5.00 per pint after midnight. It worked out cheaper for us to chip in and buy a £60 bottle of vodka with free mixers which they hold for you behind the bar if you don't polish it off that night. Not being a very big Vodka drinker my skiing was way below par that holiday - not that it is particularly above par usually!!

You want to hit the underground bar in Andorra (Pas del la casa), I got very drunk every night in there and never spent more than 3 Euros, never did work out why we got so many free drinks, (beers, jagermeisters, redshit (vodka, red bull and a red spirit of some sort, water for the morning ). A real dive but truly excellent atmosphere,
Tony
Off to france tommorow : )

I've also been to Meribel - In a Peugeot 406, 4 up with a leaky Turbo pipe. Car still got 30mpg, but smoked at least 40 woodbine, and had about 50BHP (it only had 1000 miles on the clock!) Had to get it fixed while we were there (it was a hire car, that errr, shouldn't have been out of the country). The local Peugeot Official Dealer asked "wat is der... yellow lite fuer". I poilitely replied that that was the engine managment light, before driving away with my mouth open!
I remember the steep priced also - as well as the cracking skiing!

Passed through Pas de la Casa a couple of times (to get to Soldeau once and Span the second). i remember Soldeau being reeeealy cheap - bought a ton of stuff there, and it was before the Euro, so 200pts (90p) a bottle in the local night club. Happy days, and the fitest I've ever been - put on a few pound and lost a bit of muscle since then!!
Andorra hasn't been the same since they introduced the Euro and the shop owners cashed in, although you can still get a litre bottle of Gordons for £3.50!!

ok .. Meribel was great - except that the snow wasn't all it could have been - but it did snow heavily when we left & took us 2 hours to get down the mountain. There were cars falling down all over the place.
For value skiing, i strongly recommend Livigno in Italy. It has some sort of tax free status & hence is really cheap. the food there is amazing. the only downside is a small ski area - but enough to keep you busy for a week.
