Porsche OE car cover

With the onset of the autumn and winter weather, i have been mulling over getting a porsche car cover (probably from Porsche Shop) and wondered whether people think they are a worthwhile purchase. Sadly i commute by train, so the car is not used daily, but i am wondering if they are a hassle to get on and off, any problems or things to watch out for, or if they are a complete waste of money, etc.

I also worry whether, even though it is on the driveway, the big badge and logo will just attract unwanted attention / damage!

Thanks

As a wild guess, I think it would...[]
There seems to be more envy in the UK now than ever before..[:(]

I purchased an outdoor cover when I got my car nearly two years ago and to be fair I think I've used it twice, usually when I've cleaned the car the night prior to a show or trip... even then the moisture leaves a pattern on the car from the woven material, thus you need to clean it anyway- thus never bothered since..

It would keep the sun of the car and stop any bleaching effect but obviously more suited to the summer than the winter (well should be [;)])
Cover now sits in its bag on the shelf.. I may end up taking it to the clubs Christmas open day where they have a bring and buy going on.

Hi Barny. It seems as though your circumstances are very similar to mine - in that I don't use my car at all during the week and sometimes not for a few weeks during the winter. I don't have a garage and so needed a cover which was easy to manage. I bought one of these : http://www.classicadditions.com/index.php?cPath=47_48 ....and have used it for about 4 years now. I never have any problems other than a bit of moisture on the car when I first take the cover off - but if a garage isn't an option for you as it isn't for me - then you'll have a lot more to contend with other than moisture if the car is left uncovered anyway! I just run over the whole car with a clean micro fibre cloth which takes about 5 to 6 minutes and she looks great. I tend to keep the car quite heavily Zymoled so there's never been any issue with marks or scratches, the car is now 5 years old and has virtually no swirl marks at all. I always build up the wax on the haunches at the back, on the tops of the wings and on the roof as these are the areas where the cover tends to cling.

As far as Porsche cover is concerned - I would avoid anything like that like the plague!!! The last thing you want to do is advertise what's under the cover! I've had loads of people ask me what's under the cover and I've always said, "Oh, just an old MGB that I'm going to get 'round to doing up at some point!" - and they always believe me![;)]

They also do a heavier winter cover which I'm thinking of getting but she's been fine with the lightweight one for three winters - which only seem to be getting milder! If you do go for one make sure that you ask them to throw in a duffle bag for the cover for free too! They're really good for storing the cover in the boot on the 996 when you want to go for spin.

Adrian.

Thanks Gary and Adrian, much appreciated. I understand what you say about using it Gary, but with no garage i would like something to throw over it.

Situation sounds very similar Adrian, so i have decided to give that cover a go and will no doubt be using the same line about the old MGB as well! I keep the car polished and will build some wax up on the areas you suggest.

Do you bother with a lock for it and are they quite a tight fit?

Thanks

Barney

Hi Barney. No, I didn't bother with the lock as my car is kept on my (gated and locked) driveway. Is yours, or is it on the road? I think that I might have got the lock and cable if it was to kept on the road as it might get nicked! (the cover, that is).

I'm still in my 996 (and I assume that you have a 997/997S) so it might be a slightly bigger size cover for your car but no, if anything the cover is a bit baggy on the car - but just enough to enable me to pull it down towards the ground so that by the time it's on you can only really see the area of the wheels where they meet the ground.

I forgot to mention that the lightweight breathable covers are also washable (30 deg C) if you've got a drum big enough to fit it in to. Otherwise it's the laundrette - which is where I have to go. The covers seem to "replenish" their breathability and water repellentness qualities after they've been washed.

Adrian.

Thanks Adrian. Mine is on a driveway with a gate without a lock, so think i will invest in the lock and cable to be on the safe side.

Good tip on the washing thing...think i will need to find the local laundrette.

Thanks again for your help and advice.

Barney

I have a Covercraft Weather Shield HP cover for my Gen 2, i think it is a fab cover and keeps all the crap off, lets the car breathe and is a doddle to put on and take off, i would recommend using one outdoor, one main reason is that at night my matt black cover hides the car very well on the drive and you don't notice the bright Guards red.... i would not get a Porsche one as it has a great big logo on it.... which says steal me...i have never noticed any marks on the paint from the cover.. and also if it rains when your putting in on it will allow the car to dry under the cover.

website is www.covercraft-europe.com

if you buy do call them direct as it works out cheaper.. think i paid £360 for a 997 cover

ONE THING with a cover is make sure you allow the exhausts to cool, even the under the rear ( not just the tips as the cover goes right under) so it doesnt damage the car and
melt on :)

any questions let me know

John

one other thing i forgot ...make sure what you buy is not going to scratch the paint. some can be harsh..and if you can gets dusty avoid dragging it over the car, just place on and unfold. this will prevent scratches from and dirt on it
