Guys

Was invited down to Silverstone for a GT4 Experience - over 2 Hours with Race Instructor and thought it would be helpful to give my feedback!

I set off thinking i hope its dry but only to find the track wet with drizzle and enough to set the auto rain wipers on the car. There were 2 GT4's - one yellow with CFB seats and Roll cage plus PCCB. As i have specced mine with Club Sport i wanted to drive the yellow car but was told it was not available so was given the Black Car with 18 Way sports seats and PCCB.

The seats were fantastic and if the car was not available with 918 Seats i would be more than happy with them, definitely the most comfortable yet supportive seats i have ever sat in.

Well, what can you say about the car but fantastic, the road holding even in the wet was staggering. I did the same day in a 991 GTS in April in 70 degrees and dry and would say the GT4 cornered in the wet at the same speeds a GTS 911 did in the dry.

The overall feeling of the car is that of lightness and balance compared to a 911 and the inertia while cornering is more balanced and exploitable where a drift does not scare the life out of you but can be negated with a soft 1/8th turn of the wheel. The gear shift is a work of pure magic, especially on 3rd to 2nd downshift with Sports rev match engaged "My size 8 feet don't seem to do Heel and Toe" Lol The sound of the engine on downshifts and acceleration is perfect and it fizzes to the red line. One thing that is for sure is the gearing, it is without unquestionable doubt too "long" which is a real pity as you never get to the red line as a result unless your going too fast for the Porsche race track and 2nd gear can be held quite comfortably for the whole Lap which takes away the whole concept of building a "Manual" car, and actually changing gear - which was the GT4's design brief sadly! Shorter gearing where 3rd gear is selected at 65/70mph would be perfect in my humble opinion. The PCCB brakes were totally exceptional as you would expect of the same brakes that stop a 918 and GT3 RS. I haven't tried the steels but according to Mr D they are as good as the PCCB which i find incredible but as i have specced Steel/Iron discs i sincerely hope so. My race driver said that unless you are on a race track the Steels will be just as good and not many people can get within the PCCB performance envelope anyway. So with baited breath i will wait to see if i have made the right decision. I think the PCCB are awesome and if they were the same price as the steels everyone would spec them. It is worth mentioning that they were noisy at times but no big deal!

Apart from the gearing i think Porsche have made one of the best cars in the World for sheer smile on your face thrills, the Gen2 GT4 will be out of this world with PDK and/or Shorter ratios ...

Now i have to wait until March to get mine .... Andrew

it is close to perfect, just shorter gears and full release of that engine.

both will be available after market I guess.

you will not want on the brake front, the steels are mega.

Thanks Mr D - I do hope your right ... what an unbelievable car, on a Race Circuit where the gear ratios don't effect your driving licence it must be epic!

The GT4 feels like my old S54 M Coupe! Which still to this day is my favourite car above the GTS 911! The GT4 has the character to get inside your heart and soul and think it will be a car that you will grow with emotionally and grow with technically and build a real love for. I must confess to Mr D that the Manual Box just feels so nice and rewarding, i was worried with PDK and Mercedes Slush box that i would have forgotten how to use my left foot and left arm but it was so nice to use them again. As Preuninger "Miss-spelt" said - this car is designed to divide a super car from a Drivers car and with better gearing and say 30 more Bhp he will have got it cracked, again in my very humble opinion!

I cannot ever see Porsche building this car in volume as there is no way you would ever buy a 911, speaking from someone who has just sold his beloved GTS. I personally don't think the GT4 looks anywhere near as good as any 911 - the curves are too edgy but the drive of the car is way better than a 911. I would say that the GT4 RS that i have been told is getting launched Feb 2016 is going to be the next 2.7 RS ... I wouldn't disagree with that one bit!

Lets hope i get one ...

Andrew

Good to hear that your PEC GT4 taster session went well Andrew and I'm sure that you're looking forward to taking delivery of your high-spec car in the new year. I wouldn't worry that you missed out on the PCCBs - the iron discs will be more than up to the job for fast road use with the occasional track-day thrown in. They'll be quieter too.

It's a pity that you weren't able to drive the car on the open road. The PEC track isn't the best place to evaluate the car's overall gearing but you'll have plenty of time to assess this and other features once the car's arrived.

The 18-way seats sound as though they could be the way to go for those unwilling to accept the uncompromising lightweight buckets.

981 vs 991? Sorry, can't agree with your assesment on looks. Modern 911s look much too lardy to me and still have too much rear overhang due to the (obsolete) rear engine location; and it's not as though the rear seats are useable for anything but legless dwarfs..! Mid-engine is the way forward. Just my opinion of course.

Jeff

I also doubt an RS so soon in Cayman form.

we have the 991 new turbo S in DEC just round the corner, seems soon that one, 10th I think.

and then the 911R and the very limited RSR

I do hope the RS comes sooner than later mind you but I bet 18 months to 2 years away.

Agreed D. Preuninger and his crew have a hefty work load now that they've two product lines to service and they've had their work cut out recently with the introduction of the 991RS, GT4 and GT4 Clubsport and with other projects in the pipeline.

I can't see a Cayman RS next year.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff ... I did have the option of the open road this week at PPC but actually forgot about it - silly me! Was concentrating so hard to keep the car on the road in the wet .. LOL

The 18 way seats were absolutely perfect and all anyone would really need, i guess most people spec CFBS because of the 918 relationship and its uniqueness and compliments the GT4 Design brief. I hope the Iron discs are excellent as Mr D says and i don't regret not optioning PCCB but at £85k that would have been allot of money and with the risk of £4k replacement i was out of my comfort zone financially so to speak ... But would have done it if the Racing Driver had said to do it - I bet you i spec them on my Gen2 GT4 whenever that comes out..???!!!

Anyway - now just counting down the days to the 1st March ...
