Porsche Post correction

Those who know me, or who have been reading the Boxster Register column in Porsche Post for a few years, may have wondered why some of the content did not sound quite like "me" recently.

Well, my copy seems to have been sub-edited over the last 4 months, mostly to promote club events (which I thought I was already doing!) but in a way inappropriate to the Register.

For instance Julys "It would be really motivating for our register if lots of you could make it to the Silverstone Festival" was not in my submitted copy, and indeed I find it strange to add that text, as our register is not one of the "Birthday" registers this year, and there is nothing specific that we are doing there. Don't get me wrong, I am going to the event (I go every year[8D]) and I think it is very worthwhile for any enthusiast, but the modified copy seems to give the impression that we are doing something as a register at the event, or, that the register is demotivated in some way(??)

I certainly do encourage people to go to Silverstone this weekend, but the register will not be doing anything other than attending I'm afraid - there is not even the facility / space for us to do anything else.

This months copy (August) contained advice for owners with plastic windows. This was to ensure the plastic is clean before lowering the roof , in order to try and save several hundred pounds cost in having to replace a scratched/hazed rear window. However the copy submitted was changed.

Submitted:
"A quick dust over, or use of the "fleece" (a bit of felt) that is supplied for use when you have the hardtop fitted will prevent such marring and save you having to buy a new rear-window for a long time."
Printed:
"A quick dust over with the "fleece" (a bit of felt) that is supplied for use when you have the hardtop fitted will prevent such marring and save you having to buy a new rear-window for a long time."

A subtle, but potentially costly change to the text.[] I advise people to only use the fleece on a clean window, or it will be impregnated with grit itself - and you do not want to use this to "dust" the window off - you'll scratch it! In addition, if you then use the dusty fleece in the winter with the hardtop fitted, run around for 4 months and you are very likely to have to replace the rear window as it will be wrecked in any case!

I sincerely apologise for the above changes to my submissions, I don't mind so much if it is promoting events (although I'd prefer it if it did not set expectations that can not be met), but when the changes could cause owners large sums of money I really do get upset. I will be submitting a correction to the roof advice next month, lets hope that stays unmodified.

PP editor should always get agreement to any edits in technical articals otherwise reader confidence will be undermind.

I'm sure we'll sort it out OK - I'll have a word with Stephen this weekend - he probably doesn't even know anyone had changed anything.

The silly thing is, I know I'm not the worlds greatest writer - and when I see the grammar howlers "in print" I've wished many times that someone had corrected them [:D]
But I get annoyed when the content/meaning changes [] [&:]

Spelling and grammatical errors should be corrected by the editing staff. But any changes over and above that should be ratified by the original writer prior to printing. If they cant get ratification then material should be printed as originally written. Better the writer having to apologise for some error. A seemingly simple edit (such as the one made regarding the fleece) can make a major difference, plus the people reading it are going to think it was the writer writing rubbish.
