Porsche rear decal sig= Red rag to a bull??

jasonp

New member
I wanted to bring up what another member posted a while back about baseball cap wearing youths chasing down our old Porsches,,,,
after getting onto the motorway at Bow,,,,,i was travelling at speed when after a short while a big merc c or e class was almost kissing my tailgate but because of traffic flow could not get past me,,,,,the driver then did a very silly and dangerous move to get around me and when said car was in front of me it was then i could see amg and four exhausts and i believe well over 500 bhp,,,
Driver of the amg looked around my age [earlyish 50s] and it just made no sense that a car with over 500bhp is chasing down a 210bhp nearly 30 year old car???????,,
Are our "classics" a red rag to a bull? or even older drivers see the porsche sig and assume its as quick as lightning so feel the need to constantly kiss our bumpers?,,,,
just food for thought,,,,
No way if i was driving a newish 911 turbo would i chase down any classic to prove my car is quicker,,,,
i believe the merc i am talking about above is a 6.3 bi turbo lol,,,,,, jasonp

you could be right Jason... I've had this once or twice over the years... I don't mind cars trying it on but I do object to trying to climb into your rear hatch. If on a normal road I slow down, in fact, i had this only a few weeks ago in a 30 zone which I was doing when this idiot in an MPV decided to get intermate with my rear end. I slowed down, more or less came to a stop and gestured at the fool to back off while he's busy playing with his horn. We came up to some lights at red and he pulled alongside, I gestured he open his window, he obliged and I gave him a mouthful. He answered in an east European accent that I shouldn't be driving a car like mine as I'm too slow, after I had finished swearing at the fool I told him to not get so close next time or I'd have him nicked.... lights changed green and I left a nice twin row of rubber on the ground... I felt much better then...:) regarding the Merc...AMG's don't really bother me.... they hit 60 in around 4 sec, I think that I'm close to that, they are very heavy and so around twisty's they have no chance... as for top end.. well they're no match being limited to only 155 mph..... the one car that I don't mess with is the Nissan GTR, now that car is in a league of it's own.....2.7 sec to 60 and nearly 200mph top speed...nice specs, shame they don't look better...:)

Jason,

Your description of the car, the driving and the area strongly suggest to me that the driver of the AMG was probably simply having a go at anything he could. I'd strongly suggest that he was of a certain demographic and find myself wondering whether his money (if it was indeed his own car he was driving) was made from recreational pharmaceuticals.

In short, don't let it bother you. He sounds like a grade A CU-NextTuesday and you're not. Sadly a tosser in a nice car is still a tosser.

Thanks Pete,,,,,yes i agree about the gtr and my recently retired met police officer cousin who spent a good few years behind the wheel in his job also said " a well driven GTR would be virtually uncatchable around the London streets" also heard the same about the new gti clubsport,,,,,
chaps at my garage who are sl55 and 3.2 911 owners agree the "gtr is a fantastic car but its a Nissan ! " ,,,
horses for courses i suppose and as for a 6.3 bi turbo up against a s2 is just silly but the driver didnt look the sharpest tool in the box and yes they were that close i could cleary see them lol,,,,,,cheers jasonp

Most other drivers treat me with courtesy when I am out in the 944. The reaction from other road users is certainly "nicer" than when I am driving my Mercedes or indeed my Golf. The exception, though, are Audi TT drivers who almost without exception seem to feel the need to "prove something".

Funnily enough this has been exactly my experience on all fronts!

I would agree with both of you, Glen and Oli, for the most part, other drivers do treat the 944 with respect, as I said I've only had a couple of instances when they haven't and that's over 18 years. The car is a real head turner, even my wife likes and comments on that, especially when it's youngsters, these days it happens far more often as they hear me coming from a distance, you can literally see people turn as the sound hits them. On the way back from Wales last week, we got stuck in two lane traffic through Hayes on the A312, hot day windows open to enjoy the sunshine and I heard someone call, it was a guy in the next lane looking down on me from some big SUV, just appreciating the car, said how much he loved and respected the 944. I've had that quite a few times over the years, it always brings a smile to my face.....I do love my car and for good reason but it seems that so do a lot of other people who see it on the road.... gives one a warm feeling inside...:)

yep same for me except the audi drivers there always too busy checking themselfs out in the mirror, lol,,
people always friendly now and previous s2 especally police officers,,,,
first time i have really had someone being that silly but demographics taken on board then not suprised,, jasonp

Seems a bit daft with such a power difference but it's irrelevant anyway. Racing on the road is a mugs game.
But the amg e class is a superb family motor. We have the e55 estate, it's very rapid and huge. Newer 63s are 6.3 na and later 5.5 biturbo. All are equally rapid. Certainly my slightly modified turbo wouldn't get anywhere near it.
