Porsche Sports Exhaust on base Cayman 981

Hi Tim,

this may help a bit…

I had a 2020 base cayman which came standard with the sports exhaust system.

when activating the system there was a very slight difference in the tone, slightly deeper, when really giving it some juice and getting to high revs There are a few more pops and bangs..

However, in my opinion, the difference in the sounds was not noticeable to pay for it. The novelty of the system wore off in the first month and then I never activated the system since.

hope this helps.

Hi Tim

I bought my 2015 2.7 Cayman without PSE but had it fitted by my OPC a few months later. At tickover there is no real change in exhaust note or level but it becomes more apparent as revs increase and on the overrun when the pops and crackles are heard. Compared with the original exhaust there is a noticeable drone whilst cruising on a motorway at around 70-75 mph, which is annoying but generallly i think it's a good thing. Ut certainly sounds far nicer than a 992 with sports exhaust that I borrowed recently.

Hi Tim and Mark, Just to add a different view - I had PSE fitted to my Boxster soon after purchase and love it. I only use it in Sport mode - living in Wales we have some great roads to give the car some beans ! Maybe the exhaust sound is more noticeable on the Boxster rather than the Cayman especially topless .Ade

Hi All,

Have been thinking of having the Porsche Sports Exhaust fitted to my 2013 Cayman 981, but wanted to know if anyone has it already fitted to the base model and not the S?

Is the noise noticeable, does it make too much extra noise, does it drone on the motorways, does it burble or pop too much, is it too quite, not worth the money etc.

I never got to take a test drive with a car that had it fitted already.

Thanks

Tim

I concur with Keith and Adrian although mine is a 3.4. I wouldn't be without it. There is a slight drone at 70mph but it's gone by 75mph although I'm not sure how the 2.7 is geared. On a motorway run I generally have Sport and hence PSE switched off.

On my 3.4 the PSE makes a substantial difference open versus closed, both under load and on overrun. At idle it does introduce a bit more bass, a bit like the sound the cold start system creates for a few moments until warm. A friend with a base 2.9 has it fitted and both sound as good. It certainly does not drone with the PSE switched off, which is surely the whole point of having the system. To me the difference is far more marked on the 981 than on the 987 and if you don’t hear much difference it might be worth checking it is operating correctly.

’Real wicked, innit’ 🙂

I have it on my 3.4s 981, retrofitted it and it was the best money I have ever spent on the car. I was driving behind a Cayman R on Sunday with PSE and it sounded superb and I had a base 981 Cayman following me with PSE and it also sounded great. I cannot see on the flat 6 engine how it can be anything but a good move to put this exhaust on. The character it brings to the car is just great.

I have a PSE factory fitted to my Base Cayman 981 and I would also add that it sounds best when the car is up to temperature, it absolutely does make a different sound to the exhaust without PSE, including as you mentioned, pops, burbles and yes on a motorway I do sometimes turn it off when in Lionel Richie (mellow driving) mode aka not Sport or Sport Plus mode - it is great having the flexibility of it to be either on or off. I would also add, if you have sport plus (Chrono), that also makes a subtle change to the sound of PSE (IMHO). Finally, and to be clear, it doesn't sound like the ridiculous bangs (explosions) and pops that you often see on pimped up Fiesta's, Focus and Japanese modded cars, PSE just makes it all sound extra sporty (again IMHO).

For me personally, I would definitely have added one if mine didn't already have it as it just heightens my experience of the car.

I ordered a PSE to be retro fitted by an OPC at the end of June, the car was booked in at the first available dealer slot in early July. The appointment was cancelled the day before fitting as the exhaust delivery had been delayed to week 29/30. Fitting was rescheduled to today; but unfortunately, the exhaust has still not arrived, and the ordering system is apparently not showing an ETA 😐. I am new to Porsche ownership, I am not sure if this is typical of Porsche part supply? Good luck sourcing an exhaust if you decide to go ahead!

Morning All,

First off thanks to everyone who answered my original questions about the Porsche Sports exhaust and about independent specialists in Kent.

I ordered the PSE to be retrofitted at my local independent specialist, my main OPC over an hour away so with advice from others here I used Steve at Goss Hall Classics who arranged the order and fitting. The exhaust was on back order from Porsche in Germany and it did take a fair while to arrive, but I had it installed last week while I was out of the country and I picked up the car last night.

Wow, what a difference. Only had a play for about 30 miles last night, but I love the sound already. Looking forward to the weekend now to take it out and have a proper play.

So again, thanks for the advice. Well pleased with both the exhaust and the help and advice from Steve.

Cad

Good to hear you like 😁 And thanks for the heads up, I was straight on the phone to order when I saw your post. I have been checking each month since June 👍
