Porsche sports exhaust/trackdays

Hi guys

I'm looking to do a trackday this summer but I'm worried about failing noise tests etc. Don't really want to go all the way to whichever circuit only to be sent home with no refund!

So can anyone tell me their experiences with a PSE (without switch so always on loud) either passing OR failing at UK circuits that do noise tests?

Cheers

You can buy noise meters if you want to do some work on this at a modest cost. The Health and Safety guys use them in factories etc., R & S components would be a likely source for one.

Tim,

Firstly just pop drown to your nearest track.... they can check your exhaust "noise". A couple of years ago, I had a C4 with a non switchable exhaust, it was 108 db at Goodwood, but they still let me on.

Cheers

Results seem to vary a lot depending on how test was carried out, how strict they are with revs, how hot car is, how close is car behind etc etc. I have a 997C2S with sports exhaust which is switchable. At both Goodwood and Castle Coombe car was tested at 106db with sports exhaust on. In quiet more it was measured at 101db. I have tried to get definitive answere to you question but there does not seem to be one for reason above. If you want to pass:
1. Make sure car is hot (full operating temp oil and water) when test carried out
2. Make sure there is no car close behind as sound bounces back
3. Build revs slowly and keep as low as you can get away with

I'd do that Charlie but my nearest track is 100 miles away or so - I seem to live about the furthest possible distance from a track...

And thanks Bob - so it sounds like (excuse the pun) it's around 106-108 dB in loud mode.. and touch and go on a track. Has anyone actually been turned away?

another good tip is to park the back of the car on some GRASS if there is any around.

I have done this a few times at airfield days and the sound gets absorbed by the green stuff and you can get away with more.

also learn where the noise meters are on the track as they can still kick you off when you are going round!

Bedford is notorious for this and you just have to back off round the back of the track!!

Tim,

You could measure it on the day in default mode. If it fails, then switch it into quiet mode and remeasure. You can then always go round in quiet mode. I did this at Castle Combe, although after the session realised that the switch had defaulted back to default after the engine was turned off.
