Porsche Store in NYC

I'm in New York at the moment and stopped by the Porsche store in Manhattan where they sell all the overpriced paraphenalia. It resulted in an amusing conversation with one of the salesmen. As he drew my attention to a $21,000 watch I commented that it cost far more than my Porsche and given the choice between affording the watch and the Porsche I was opting for the car. He then seamlessly segued into what a bargain some of the other watches were at around the $4,000 mark. On our way out the door without buying anything my girlfriend said I should have asked him if he had one.

this is true..

I am not rich but I know what I want.. I would happly buy a nice time peice but it would have to be really special. But some people spend money like it was water from a tap.

I personaly must have Scottish Roots in my family some where in the long past I didn't know about as I just will not part with money unless I have to.. I have no issues in buying things I need or can benifit from eg tools etc. I always buy some thing with the view to how much is it worth when i go to sell it..

I have not issues in driving a £300 Ford Ka as a run about as I know I have a collection of 7 of Germany's finest at home 8 I forgot the Merc. I do laugh at the ones in their new 4x4's I still get from A to B and I still have a watch that tells the time.. only I prefure not to have it all out on display like they do..

Each to their own I guess.. [:D]

OOPS.................I am into my watches, as stated what will it be worth when i come to sell it read up and invest wisely and the right watch can make money, usually applies to Rolex.
I am not flash i just have an appreciation of the engineering and materials that go into them, a 9.99 Argos watch is just as reliable and functional.
Just my tuppence [:)]

We see a lot of this in the aviation world, people sporting huge Breitlings and then complaining about the cost of flying....for the £3,000 cost of a Navitimer you can buy a 1/6th or 1/8th share in a very nice Piper Cherokee/Warrior or Cessna 172

To me having a share in an aeroplane shouts 'AVIATOR' or 'PILOT' much more than a flash watch....

Agree,
if you ever feel like treating yourself to a quality timepiece buy an Omega, as good as a Rolex/Breitling and will hold decent money, the Seamaster seems to go for real good money secondhand after Prince Willie is seen wearing one in a lot of pics/TV Coverage.
Old Rolex seadwellers and submariners bring good money, i have a Submariner anniversary one of the last series with a couple of differences, so that may well appreciate, it went up by £400 rrp a couple of months after i bought it.
Tudor is another brand worth looking at for investment (It is a Rolex in everyway bar the name) Rolex case and workings !

Some nice new stuff from Stowa and Sinn (and Dornbluth [:)])
Old subs hold their value although I'm not keen and old seamasters are great value at a few hundred.
Bought my wife a Tudor oysterdate for xmas. I think most of them have different movements to their Rolex equivalents but they are good solid pieces all the same.
Trying not to buy too many!!

Feel your pain DavidL !

Rolex Sub Anniversary (Green bezel Engraved Rehault)
Omega Speedmaster
Tag Carrera Twintime
Tag 2000
Original 50's Longines Conquest

And yes a £8.00 Argos atch will tell the time reliably and accurately, as will a Toyota Yaris/ Eurobox get you from A to B or anywhere else when compared to a Porsche but it is all about quality and knowing what has gone into the product that counts, along with the sense of occasion.

Some people collect and pay a fortune for stamps ?

I bought a Vostock Amphibian from a dealer in Lithuania over eBay for £25, well made 'real' watch but the after-market strap was very cheap and has broken.

I do hanker after a Poljot Aviator and might treat myself next year.

For my 40th I got a Tissot Chronometer, which seemed a good blend of Form, Function and Price (£200)

Got a 1960s vintage Omega Seamaster
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean (orange bezel)
A Tag Link I don't wear anymore.

I fancy a Tag Grand Carrera next and have just ordered a Phillipe Starck O-ring for something completely different.

I'm on a few waiting lists for Rolex Daytonas and my turn came up 2 weeks ago for one. I've not got the money at the moment so I flipped it to a dealer in London and made £300 in doing so (plus another £70 cashback on my credit card) :)

Eldavo,
I would love to see the vintage Omega, the planet ocean is nice but they do not come in midsize ? a guy at work is into huge Breitlings they are mearly as big as a wall clock, a good friend who can afford to indulge goes to the Canary Isles a lot and haggles with the jewellers he always gest a sizeable lump knocked off.
I was looking at the Richard Mille watch stand at last years classic Le Mans, they cost a fortune and are butt ugly IMO

Just put my Tag Carrera Twin Time on as i am off work tomorrow and do not wear my watches for work as they would get scratched and knocked too bits, i have an old Tag 2000 Proffesional on a military strap for that.

It must be a 944 thing - one of my favourites. It looks a little tidier as it has had a good service, yellow wheel replaced with a new white one (so it still doesn't quite match) hands sorted and a new Omega strap and buckle.

see that's very nice and I could actually see myself wearing one. The current fashion of enormous watches all seem to look like something Flavor Flav would wear around his neck and I confess i just don't get it. Wow, i just realised I sound really old!

I bought a Stowa auto marine last year. At 40mm it is noticeably the largest I have but its growing on me. Certainly nothing bigger though.
I find mine must have the date otherwise I can't wear them at work. I need the date all day and oddly writing it all the time doesn't help me remember!

Love a nice watch ! Have a black U Boat Left Hook Chronometer and a Tissot T-Touch Titanium. Used to buy a Porsche Design one each time I went to Strasse in Leeds. Look good and not too dear - have 3 at the mo.

The IWC Porsche Design ones are good - friend has an Ocean 500 which is nice.
Eterna ones don;t seem to have quite the same following it seems.

Eldavo,
I was not aware that planet ocean was available mid size though i have never asked until now, i wil have to wait until my Speedmaster is paid for, then see who else has interest free on offer ;-)
I was in Newcastle today and had a look in Goldsmiths, my Rolex datejust with president bracelet and white gold bezel which i PX'd for my Submariner Anniversary will now cost £4750 to replace, i regret getting rid as it was very understated, i received 2k PX and it was sold within a week at it's original retail of £2250
