Porsche to offer Sport Mode Retrofit kit

Not sure on UK pricing (US pricing ranges between $895 for a manual to $1695 for the Turbo with Tip/PDK coming in at $1195, all plus shipping etc). Requires dealer install and car coding:

New from Porsche! A factory software kit that adds a new dimension to your Porsche. By pressing a dash-mounted "SPORT" switch, you can chose between a stock mode and a Sport Mode with improved performance dynamics.
  • Benefits of Sport Mode activation:
  • - Sporty tuning of engine Motronic software, PASM, PSM, Tiptronic Transmission (if applicable), all-wheel-drive system (if applicable).
  • - For vehicles with factory Sport Exhaust, the new Sport button would control exhaust settings.
  • - For vehicles with PCM, new personalized settings can now be controlled. Including memory for lights, wiper, climate control, & door lock settings.
  • - For 2009-2011 vehicles with PDK, you get a Sport Plus button with Launch Control and Race Track Shift Strategy.
  • - For Turbo models, Overboost is also added for additional acceleration.
When the Sport button on the center console is selected, the engine management system enhances the engine response. A modified throttle map relates the pedal angle in the footwell to a much wider angle of opening on the throttle valve. Throttle response is significantly more immediate, and, in the higher gears, a hard rev-limiter helps protect the engine under acceleration.

Vehicles with the optional Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) also switches to Sport mode for harder damping and more direct steering, and, therefore, better road holding. For maximum dexterity, PSM can be set to standby while the car is still in Sport mode. For safety, it is set to intervene automatically only when ABS assistance is required on both the front wheels.

For Tiptronic or PDK transmissions, gearshift points are delayed until the upper rev range. The shift times are shorter, the gear changes sportier. At low rates of deceleration"”even with high engine speeds"”the system initiates a swifter brake-induced downshift. In manual mode, gear changes are faster and more dynamic. In Sport mode, the trigger threshold for PSM is raised for increased longitudinal and lateral dynamics. Agility is enhanced under braking for corners with PSM, enabling greater handling response under braking and exit acceleration, especially at low speeds. Fitment: 2005-2011 Carrera, Cayman, & Boxster, and 2006-2009 Turbo models without Sport Chrono or Sport Chrono Plus.

Note: Professional installation required by an authorized Porsche dealer, estimated installation time is 2-3 hours. Must acquire an enabling code from Porsche.
 
And I guess if the dealer is going to fit it, it wouldn't violate the warranty, and would be covered by it.
 
I don't get this rev-limiter business either - can't understand the sense in over-riding something that's there to protect the engine from damage.
 
Agree with the cynics - what are you really getting for the outlay???
It's already got a rev limiter...
If my car has PASM - I want to decide when to use it at all times
I assume the sporty noisy exhaust has a separate switch too - do I need another one?
Why do I need a memory for the wipers? Every time I get home and its raining the next morning when I start up its sunny...

Would love to be able to program the front sidelight LED's (gen2) as automatic daytime running lights though...

Yes it would.

You will have to declare this as a modification to your insurers though so expect a hike in premium.
 
Sounds like they have just released another retro fit , similar to that of fitting cruise control , a way of cashing in on mods that people already do by other means. The throttle response and rev limiter control can be achieved with a remap of the ECU , which also gives a power hike of 20 odd bhp. The SPORT button changes the throttle response from the pedal giving more throttle opening for less pedal travel. It modifies the PSM , so that whilst still active it comes in later , allowing more control and slip before the brakes are applied , something only really useful for those that track their cars and are upset by being defeated by PSM in corners. The rev limiter adaptation doesn't allow the car to rev any higher but does allow the car to run full throttle to the limit rather than gradually feathering it . Again , those that track their cars swear by this mod claiming it allows a few more rpms to be useable which translates into later gear changes and more speed during acceleration. Personally i'm not convinced by any of it and since I already have "sport chrono plus" on my own car , can vouch that on normal road use its not really much of a benefit, if at all. The only thing I was grateful for having the sport button , was the ability to retro fit a PSE and control it without the need for new wiring. A lot of the user configuarable options you get with sport chrono plus can actually be coded using a PWIS , the only difference is you cannot turn them on and off yourself.

Even with the SPORT button active you can still return PASM to normal mode it just retains the throttle remap and PSM settings. If you have PSE fitted and dont want that active then you need an overide button (something else I've fitted).

Interesting comment that.

On my PDK Boxster S pressing the sport button results in a very significant change in the way the engine responds and the way the gears change. The effect is not subtle - it feels like a different car. (and no it's not got PASM so no effect there)

Maybe on a manual car the effect may be less.

Anybody got any opinions on this.

Got to give it a thumbs up on the "no wart" .. had one on the last Box .. ugly as sin [:'(] Current one we turned down all the sports options as we did not want that "wart" of a clock
 
The PDK cars have a software program for gear change , so i'm not surprised that sport makes a more noticeable effect , as both the engine and gearbox change their response. Launch control addition and the more agressive gear changing may make this a viable option for PDK cars , but certainly I dont think the gains are worthwhile for a manual.
