Porsche VTS tracker

Dear All,

I am in the process of specifying a MY07 Boxster S to replace my beloved 2004 Boxster S. I'm going to stick a tracker on it for insurance purposes.

So should I go for a NavTrak at around 580 quid or the Porsche system at an eye watering 985.25. They're both Thatcham Cat 5.

I seem to recall some thread that commented that fitting the Navtrak will invalidate my warranty in what would be a slightly cynical attempt by Porsche to squeeze more money out of their customers by insisting on fitting their approved tracking device.

I put Porsche VTS in my Cayenne as I was right at the launch of the Porsche system period and thats all they would do ..and apart from the bill would not know its there... perfect hidden installation ... Ohh ignoring the silly electronic key thing I have to carry (its about 3cm by 2cm by 0.5cm) .. Wont fit in a wallet .. hanging it on the key fob kinda defeats the idea.. so you just have to remember to pick it up and drop it in your pocket every time you go out ..

A friend of mine got a 911 a couple of months after my Cayenne from the same OPC .. also got the same "we cant install any other system" line .. but he refused and demanded an option ...they organised the RAC system for him... I wondered if they had had a lot of "No's" from people and where being a tad more flexible .. He still got the "if it does something electrically bad to your car .. thats outside warrenty" line .. which I suppose is a fair point .. The RAC thing has a huge ugly 5-6 cm dia round antenna which sits stuck on the windscreen at the drivers side .. looks like a big "tax disk holder" except its a couple of 2cm thick.. looks ugly IMO ... dont know if thats a std install and they all have that or a bad install...

I have PTS wiring , but a tracker fitted (as it was Reading car originally) - neither are activated as any possible reduction in insurance premium is neagted by the cost of the damn tracking devices (and most insurers won't give a discount). If you want your car back after its been stolen then fair enough, i'd rather not see it again.

I wouldn't bother with either just change your underwriter.

So few get pinched and so few Police cars have the equipment to find it if it does.

JCB..

I had a Cayman S demo car supplied by a South East OPC, but the car appeared to be registered with Porsche UK (Reading). It was fitted with Tracker.

The car I have ordered today has been fitted with the Porsche VTS. Is it a good system and do the insurance companies recognise it?

Yes its a Thatcham Cat 5 system (highest rating) .. will be recognised by insurance companies as a suitable tracking unit required for high value cars .. may make the differance between a) just getting insurance or b) getting a reduction

Thanks, is it a subscription service? I have as yet to see any information on it hence the questions.

Also can anyone recommend a good insurer? I am currently with Privelege and need to get them to give me a quote.

Many list in the back on PCGB magazine .. I just moved my Cayenne from Privelege and to be honest they where competative for it .. Reason for change is the Mass Telephone call centre mess versus personal Service .. I went with a local Broker recommended by my contact at reading OPC .. FWIW they are A-Plan Insurance in Beaconsfield - they put me on Sun Alliance ... they also do Sues Boxster S and again they got her a reasonable deal

You will have to pay a subscription charge for the year on your VTS - there is no carry-over from a previously registered user.

My wife has just bought an ex-demo 2.7 with VTS and was very surprised that the existing subscription could not be transferred.

Privilege have quoted me just over £400 with protected no claims and guaranteed hire car. I am 34 and live in Wiltshire with no accidents or convictions. Does that seam reasonable for a £42K car. I would have sworn I was paying £700ish on the last Boxster

Sound's like a GOOD deal to me ,I could be almost your dad [:D] and I paid £420 last year on my Boxster from NU did not quote me happy [:D]

Brian

£376.80 if I don't have protected bonus or guaranteed hire car.

£457.80 if I have both of the above.

Looks OK I think.

Price looks very good, provided you have told thema about all the factory options - if not you will only get back the value of a standard car in the event of a full loss claim

Just popped in from the Cayman forum...and thought I would add my 10penneth.

My insurance was through Porsche insurance services, on a NU policy and did quote me happy. No tracker needed as car with options under £50k, class 1 cover for business, 4 yrs protected bonus, living in West London, not garged and 4 points on my licence..includes European breakdown cover also..total £860.00.

Like others have said here, probably wouldnt want it back if mine was stolen and VTS system appears to be unproven!
