Porsche Warranty for older cars

Hi All,

How many of you have extended their Porsche Warranty on cars from about 2013. Mine runs out next February so am thinking about getting the car ready to see what needs to be done and what the costs would be.

Whats the general view on the 111 point review/test that you need to go through and then the general cost of the extended 1 or 2 years warranty?

Thanks.

Cad.

You don't need to have the 111 point check if renewing before your current warranty expires anymore, as to the warranty itself I have always renewed it because if anything major or in some cases quite small goes wrong I don't want a bill for thousands to put it right.

I had the pcm replaced earlier this year which would have cost me about 2.5k as to value it costs more and covers less than the one on my bmw's it does not cover wear and tear items like dampers for instance although you do pay an excess on the bmw policy for each claim but on balance the bmw warranty is better value

If you do buy the warranty you get a discount if buying 2 years at a time rather than 1 so it's more cost effective if keeping the car longer term.

981s have been pretty reliable, and if your car doesn't have Sports Chrono then you won't have the most common issue which is the dynamic transmission mounts failing (they're around £1200 per side to replace if they fail, which is a completely random if they do). Other than that if the car is in good condition, well maintained and used regularly I think the risk of a big bill is fairly low so "peace of mind" is quite pricey IMHO.

Morning!

The mounts seem to go randomly, there were more occurences on 981s but my 718 GT4 had one go earlier this year when the car was only a year or so old. I was told at the time that there seemed to have been a dodgy batch fitted at the factory as they'd had a few cars in for the same sided part on 718s and 992s (opposite sides in the cars as the engines are fitted the other way round).

It all comes down to your personal level of risk and how lucky, or not, you're feeling!

Cad,

If you already have the extended warranty you’ll be aware of the restrictions like having only Porsche approved components such as the battery and N-rated tyres, etc.

As Dave has said 981s seem generally to be robust and like many modern cars problems quite often are electrical and require expensive module replacements. If you have PDK just be aware that other than software reflashes and minor external replacements its failure will require a very expensive complete replacement … £12k+ I believe, which the extended warranty will cover.

I have a 2015 car (981) and it came with two years warranty when I bought it secondhand from an OPC. I renewed it for one year recently, just before the warranty expired, and did not have to have the 111 point check. The cost from memory was £660 which did not include Porsche Assistance as I have Green Flag assistance as part of my bank current account. Its a difficult call but, on balance, I think I will renew it again when the time comes as you don’t get too much repair work done on these cars for the cost of the warranty.

The warranty is well worth it IMO. Having the peace of mind that if anything major goes kaput, you'll hopefully be covered. A friend of mine has just had is water pump replaced on his 911 and it was £5K!!

As a side note, a replacement 4.0 engine in the GTS/GT4/Spyder is £34k not including labour.

Does anyone know if Porsche get in touch when the warranty is nearing its end with the option to renew or is it up to myself to contact them for renewal?

Hi,

I’m pretty sure that it’s down to the owners to make the initial contact.

it does say on the documentation that it’s not automatically renewed.

I paid £156 + VAT at my local OPC but I expect that the £250 is the maximum charge. May also depend on your relationship with the OPC.

This is what I was quoted by OPC Teesside this week with regards to costings and information:

The process to extend the warranty is…

[ul][*]Proof of ownership for a minimum of 90 days (Copy of the log book in your name)[*]The car must undergo and pass a 111 point check. (Currently £218 inc vat) [/ul]Once the vehicle has passed the check, the following extension options are open to you.

Extend warranty

1 year £740

2 Year £1270

3 year £1860

Porsche assist

1 year £175

2 Year £285

3 year £385

I have just sold a 2011 987.1 Spyder I had had for 5 1/2 years.

Always had the OPC warranty and claimed just twice - once for a minor hose leak and once for the cup holders to be replaced (as one got stuck in the dash and OPC said is a full replacement jobby..!). So those two relatively small items cost me about £4500 over 3 warranties, but I slept sound knowing I had a great warranty. As others have said, it's your risk/reward decision but for me £750 a year is perfectly acceptable for the peace of mind - repairs on these things can be eye watering if you're unlucky...

I had made up my mind to extend the Porsche Approved Warranty on my Cayman, so have contacted my local OPC at Tonbridge to see what my options are.

Of course, nothing is easy with this car. Because OPC at Teesside who sold the car to its previous owner put down the VIN number wrong by one number on the warranty documentation, when I told Porsche about the change of ownership, Porsche in Germany refused to transfer over the warranty and it fact that meant that it was very lucky that the previous owner had no reason to use the warranty as it would have been rejected. In the end OPC at Teesside have underwritten the remaining time on the warranty, but now according to Porsche, my car doesn’t have existing warranty to continue. It looks like it will have to have another 111-point check now at Tonbridge and then I can start a new warranty. So that’s the cost of the 111-point check and no £80 off each level of warranty offered.

Have emailed Teesside to see if there is anything that they can do about this. I've got a copy of all the work carried out on the car to bring it back up to scratch for the warranty to start, which wasn't cheap, but no copy of the 111-check. I wondered if Teesside would have that still?

If they hadn't made a mistake with the warranty, I could have just extended the warranty over the phone with my credit card and no 2hr20min round trip to get the 111-check carried out.
