Repeated on here for those who don't frequent other Boxster forums:-

"Porsche are introducing a new Porsche Approved warranty from the 1st June 2004 which will address some of the component failures you have experienced, this new policy will be competitively priced at £725 including Porsche Assistance"


Err, so we now pay an insurance premium for the RMS that costs us more than a non goodwill fix. Progress ?

Be interesting to see the outcome of the RMS survey.
 
What is likely to go wrong with a Boxster - S or otherwise?

Probably nothing! - the RMS is the single most common item.

What is likely to go wrong with a Boxster - S or otherwise that isn't covered by warranty

Probably nothing! - Bits that wear out - pads & discs are not covered.

Your £725 gives you peace of mind and Porsche another wedge to stick in their coffers.

The only value you get with an extended warranty is when something serious goes wrong.

As John says, your discs and pads aren't covered as they are consumables. Warranty is only really worth it if something BIG goes wrong (like my engine failure) - but that's extremely unusual, only myself and Jackie are the only people I know with an engine failure.

Saying that I am taking out the warranty on my GT3 - if Porsche can ever locate the parts required.
 
I know of a couple more.
Someone on the Factory Tour with us had a Boxster engine fail - they never told them what was wrong.

I bought it - knowing that if I did so then nothing would go wrong.
On the other hand, if I had not bought it sod's-law says I would be £10K out of pocket before you could say "full service history"...[&:]
 
Well i've phoned the dealership and asked them to send through exactly what is covered and what isn't.

I've just received some Porsche vouchers and worked out that it will cost me less with the vouchers to buy the warranty than it will cost me to rectify the RMS if it goes up the creek so I think i'm in.

Will just check over the warranty document prior to handing over the reddies.

I think it's up to 9 years old or 100,000 miles.

It would need to go to an OPC for an inspection first which could cost £100 to £200 or, in some cases, free if they are carrying out a service at the same time.

No surprise... Porsche don't send out warranty renewals... at least my OPC didn't. Just ring them, but don't be surprised when they ask you for a further 111 point check before placing it back under warranty.

Nag the OPC but they may tell you you are out of time as your service predates the renewal and we are now some three months later on.

The cost shot up last year to something like £925 (inc Porsche Assistance = RAC) which makes it of questionable value, especially as it often seems not to cover the things that go wrong and you are effectively tied into the OPC for servicing. After a chat with J Z Machtech about things that typically go wrong with the car I decided to give it a miss last time (but then I had managed to get the RMS done twice under warranty before then!!). Fingers crossed....

Can not believe this. What an oppourtunity to make more money send out a simple letter for renewal. I am so disapointed i will be visiting my OPC on saturday when I take my 964 for annual service. I will not be paying for a 111 point check when they could of sorted this out at the end of august.

I am concerned about this because a fellow friend has just had a new engine put in his boxster, some £11k later. £1000 seems steep but in reality it might be worth it.

What do you do for the best?
 
I was sent a letter to renew. But I think it is difficult to argue that it is all their fault that you didn't renew the warranty on your car. Personally, the letter made it easier, because it included some info, but wasn't the reason I renewed in time.
 
The Warranty costs £895 now but it does not tie you in to Porsche servicing, as long as you use Porsche approved parts.
I've heard the reason why they don't send out reminders is because the sales team don't make much if anything on them, whearas the service team probably make a shed load on all the claim!
Very stupid.
 
No right or wrong answer on this one. Yes its expensive but also its unlimited in value , so if you are unlucky enough to have a big claim its all covered. Forget the policy if you are going to try and claim for a window regualtor , wheel bearing , caliper , or some electronic fault , there are plenty of exclusions on the policy. I wouldn't bother on the basis of RMS, the problem isn't significant , and can probably wait until the clutch needs replacing.
 
Yes, I have the same experience with my OPC - They never send out reminders as they told me 'they make hardly anything out of it', which isn't very much joined up thinking as

a) It's a service to the customer
b) It's a pretty safe bet that the customer will renew
c) Include mailshots on servicing/new models/brand sales etc to drive non-warranty related sales up

I could go on but my impression was that they really couldn't care less about the warranty. [:'(]
It took me 5 weeks to get my booklet through. Luckily, I schedule my annual service for end of Sept and my warranty ends October so they inspect it at service time for no extra charge.[:)]
