Toying with getting a 997. Have read extensively about all the engine issues and would like a Gen II, wouldn't most people, but out of my price range at the moment. My question is what should I be paying for either a Carrera or C2S around the 2005 mark (would like to avoid the high tax years). If possible something between 40 and 70k miles. Thanks.

Possible 997 purchase

Hi Jim,
I had the same reservatiions but eventually purchased a 2005 997.1 from Paragon Porsche at the end of last year. Now had it for 7 months and I just love it. Dont use it at all during the week, and every weekend it just makes me smile. Absolutely no problems whatsoever and I will renew their warranty at the end of the year, which you can do at Paragon. They are such effortless machines, 3rd gear is just sublime and I totally recommend Paragon - they actually have a couple in about your year target at the moment, but be quick 'cos they do go very quickly. They maybe a tad higher than others but I firmly believe you do get what you pay for - they spent over 1.5k on mine just in prep, with full service, discs/pads, ful coil pack replacement, valet, good 12 mth warranty etc.

Discounting cars produced after the tax date change purely for saving a few hundred pounds is crazy. With the money involved in owning a car like this it's pointless trying to save on this. Buy the best car you can afford.
Wow....reading your signature, you clearly did! But I agree you go for the best you can afford. If you are fretting over tax, rego, and other things, a back-to-the-drawing board approach might be considered. In the overall scheme of things, it is the pleasure of driving, not the worry of tax disc costs that should drive your decision.
All the very best in finding your dream.

The irony is, if you are concerned about engine issues, (the experts will tell you how low or high the failure rate is), does going for a very early car to save on tax put you at more risk of engine issues than a later car where Porsche started to strengthen bearings etc? That is a question rather than a statement as I don't know enough about IMS and RMS and what Porsche did along the way to try to address it.
Very late reply I know but decided to wait a while whilst I save for a Gen II. Not being a 'lucky' fellow I didn't want the risk of the earlier engines. Agree about fretting over tax, it was not so much the extra couple of hundered but whether it would impact come sales time. Anyway, whilst I wait for the bank balance to build up (a 997 remains the dream) I got a high tax Z4M Coupe to keep me amused. Theory being they've bottomed out so shouldn't lose much come trade in time.
