Possible engine transplants for a lux.

I've been grateful for the advice over the last few months on the benefits of the S2 engine but before I go down that path I wondered:
  • can I rebuild my 2.5 lux engine to turbo spec ?
  • is it easier to do a full turbo transplant from a 220 or 250 bhp car ?
  • can the engine from the turbo be supercharged ?
  • what are the 2.8 rebuilds from the 2.5/2.7 that I've heard about ?

I'd say that's not cost effective, far better to buy a used Turbo engine and rebuild that.

I can't imagine there's any difference in complexity.

I can't see why not, but it will be much more costly than using a turbocharger for the same output with more hassle during setup (custom map etc). I'm not sure what you'd do about the exhaust, you'd probably need something custom made too. I'd definately go for a Turbo in this instance and simply up spec the turbo.

Andrew at Promax had a 2.8 built many years ago, so it's well worth speaking to him. I'd also recommend Simon at SPS who can build whatever your heart desires (why stop at 2.8 [;)]).

I think the prices of 968 lumps are falling slightly, so they might be worth considering alongside the S2 engine, I guess it just depends what power/weight you're aiming for.
 
The turbo is not just a bolt on to the standard 2.5. Almost everything is different, most of which you cant see, cylinder wall thickness, ceramic inserts in exhaust seats, additional sensors etc, so I'd say rebuild a turbo.

Turbo should fit in to a Lux but there are known issues with fitting intercooler in Lux badge panel. Also engine managemet system is much more complicated, so would really need donor turbo car not just engine.

Unless your engine is finished, the general feeling seems to be that you get more smiles per £ and effort by upgrading the suspension.

There is much more to a Turbo than just the turbo including different brakes, suspension, engine management, cooling, intercooler, pipework, exhaust, instruments, the list is almost endless.

The cost of "proper" Turbos are so llittle you would be far better selling the Lux and buying a Turbo.
 
The 2.8's were 2.5ltr engines with S2 crank shafts which provide a longer stroke hence increasing capacity to 2.8ltr's. Alot of work for not much gain really unless you turbocharge. Turbo charging a lux engine doesn't make sense. Would require a complete strip down, rebuild incorporating uprated internals, a reduction in compression ratio. It would be cheaper to buy a turbo. Supercharging - probably your best and most cost effective bet to get a charged engine, but do lux engines have knock sensors? If not then I wouldn't want to be supercharging as you don't have that element of active safety and will be solely relying on good engine mapping - which is fine and reliable as long as nothing goes wrong or you don't get a dodgy batch of fuel in your tank.

The V8 option might seem attractive but would also be very costly, there is a lack of a proven 'plug & play' kit for UK cars and at the end of it all you're left with inadequate brakes, suspension and transmission to cope with the increase in Torque and BHP.

If you really fancy a project then a 1.8 ltr turbo or 2.0 ltr turbo unit from the VAG group might be fun.

Whichever way you go you are looking at sinking alot of time and money into such projects. If you have an S2 engine available then that would be by far the easiest and most cost effective routes if seling up and buying an S2/turbo is not an option. But even then you'd ideally need a brake, suspension and transmission upgrade.
