Possible light upgrade

I have just finished fitting a light upgrade to my Roadster which also uses 7" round lamps. Being a Jap import it came with pitiful sealed beam units which probably didn't bother the previous owner living in London but which were scary on the way home to Devon.

I have fitted a pair of Raybrig clear lens units after seeing good reviews on the MX5OC forum. They take an H4 bulb and drop in in place of the sealed beams. They should fit a 924/944 also, although as you can see in one of the pics the 944 light has 4 tabs attached to it whereas the Mazda has a traditional retainer ring to hold a bare unit in the frame. If something could be fabricated (quite easy I imagine, probably by attaching the 944 style tabs to a ring from another car) to hold them in then they would be a good upgrade to the 944 also, even for those with Ice Shark kits and up to 135w bulbs according to the packaging.

edited for comedy typo

This shows the difference in the units with the 944 one on the right. You can just about see the tabs against the concrete.

Lastly how they look on the car; they certainly make things look more modern for what that's worth with pop-ups.

I will try to have a mess with the sealed beam and my 944 to see if they could be made to fit and if they can I might buy myself another pair.

That would have been too sensible...

I can take one in a bit of the back of the sealed beam and the 944 one side by side.

As soon as I looked at the back of the 944 lamp unit and saw the 3 lugs rather than 4 I had thought it had before it rang a bell that they actually attach to the "breakolite" clips that form the adjusters. It might not be so easy to fabricate something up then. If anyone wants to have a go I'm happy to send them a sealed beam unit to use as a pattern before they lay out any money - I won't be in a position to play with it myself any time soon as my car is in storage.
