Possible wheel bearing gone.

Last friday driving in to london for work i noticed that from 40mph to 60mph there is a constant noise which gets louder the faster you go i believe it to be the wheel bearing on the off side front wheel as i've experienced this in other cars. The sound dissipates when the wheel is turned to the right but when it's straight or turning to the left the sound is quite strong.

Is it likely to be the Wheel bearing and if so how much should i expect to pay to get it replaced.

Jack the car(s!) up and wobble the wheel.

A shot wheel bearing will be apparent - there will be more play than on other wheels, and (if badly worn), it will 'grumble' when you spin it.

^^ whats been said

I'm pretty sure you can tighten up or loosen the bearing, I did it myself a year or 2 ago when checking a few things over - it might just need that. Although that description sounds just like when mine went, the pax side went so whenever you turn left the body rolls away from it and unloads the wheel - the noise went away... sounded really odd [:)] Had me weaving down the roads at night making it stop and start......

Do what I did, just turn up the radio [:D]

Front wheel bearings are easy to adjust if needed, in fact you can do it with the tool kit that came with the car in (one allen key and a screwdriver), I did just that whilst parked in a cafe carpark in Germany.
As said clarks garage will give a better explanation than I could.
The rears are non adjustable and I gather not a lot of fun to change.

Fronts, if not grinding can be easily adjusted, wheel off, split pin out, tighten nut as required, pin back wheel on.
Rears - more difficult, but I did mine with the arm still on the car - I hate bleeding brakes!

If it is making a noise, change it as the bearing will be getting damaged, noises are usually tight bearings whining or lack of lubrication. Scam75s turbo S had a similar noise and is now on my ramp getting 2 new ones fitted today!

Alasdair,

How much would one expect to pay to get the 2 fronts replaced? I mean the cars done 223k miles so to me it's either change now or wait for catastrophic failure. which doesn't really appeal to me.

Alex, i did the whole turn the radio up but now i've blown the speakers, which suits me fine really as they're the originals so a change would've been in order eventually.

Many thanks the assistance guys [:)]

Skooby,

Fronts are pretty easy to DIY. If you don't have a press you can often drift them in with a large socket, or even work around them repeatedly with a hammer and pin punch.

Very satisfying. And improve the steering feel significantly, particularly if the old ones are shot.

Unfortunately i don't have the tools or the space to do it anymore. I'm hoping to have this situation changed asap but at present i don't even have a parking space for the car. []

Just booked the car into the local Classics and Ferrari Specialist to get both the front wheel bearings done. I would opt for all the wheel bearings but at £75 an hour i think i'll wait till another time.

You may ask why a Ferrari specialist and the answer is simple, the first garage i spoke to didn't know if it was front or rear wheel drive. [&o]

Besides if they're good i'll let them loose on the Stag [:)]

PS

I really miss having my own tools and space to work on a car myself. [:(]
