Potential bargain or lots of trouble

I'm tempted to fly over on Friday to have a look at this:

Mileage looks low but owner says he has full history. Was for sale at a dealer last year for around 4K Euro more - now being sold privately. Sounds all wrong but surely worth a day of effort - nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that. Anyone have any views on this ? Anyone know who I could use to inspect it should it reach that stage ?

Looks like an interesting car. I assume it started life as a standard RS? In which case its clearly heavily modded. What would you want to do with it? I'm not sure its worth turning back to original, but would probably make a great race car, or 3.8 replica?

Will be interested to hear other people's views on it.
 
Depends what it is? Has obviously been a race car and has had damage. Would need a very detailed inspection by someone in the know to see extent of this and how well repairs have been done?

What history has it got for last 18 years?

Damaged RS with non-original bodywork and no/little history has to be one of the hardest cars there is to try and sell...unless its ridiculously cheap....which this is not imho.

If you were buying it to go actual racing in then there are MUCH cheaper cars to do that with.

I honestly think if anyone is buying an RS they should buy the best car they can afford....and if you can't afford one of the really nice cars then buy something else...it will be the right decision in the long run....[:)]

I think, that´s absolutely correct. Mongrels are dangerous.
 
If memory serves that RS has been knocking about on mobile.de for more than a year, being sold by http://www.atlanticauto.de/ for around 54/5k euro it sold a couple of months ago or at least it disappeared from the classifieds now its back up for sale from a private seller. I think i saw a photo of it with a for sale sticker on it at spa last year or the year before[:D]
 
All very sensible advice - not what I wanted to hear [:D] May have to divert my attention to a NB car instead but the widebody looks so nice. I still think it's worth the cost of the plane ticket to have a quick look.
 
just my two pennyworth. I think it comes down to this. If you are after a wide body car with RS running gear and that running gear is ok and not well time served and the car is straight ,then it's got to be worth a punt, on the theory that you probably wouldn't be able to build one at much less. The chassis number then becomes a bonus. If your buying for any other reason then i think it probably makes less sense.
The thread on pistonheads makes a very good point . For all the subtle and not so subtle changes that there are in the RS it almost makes no sense trying to build a close copy as you get very close to the real thing money wise by the time you've bought all the bits. Why go to all the trouble when you can buy one off the peg so to speak. Unless your talking about maybe 9meisters reproductions , in which you end up with a virtually new car it makes little sense.

Well these are the lines that I'm thinking along. It's got all the bits - ally bonnet, genuine RS recaros, genuine Speedlines etc - if the body is straight and has decent history then it should be a decent buy for my purposes. It's a big if though ! I'm not looking for a garage queen or something for investment purposes - as long as I get most of my money back after I've had my use out of it then I'd be happy. It would be looking to keep it for the long term though.
 
There have been about three wide body conversions that i can think of in the past discussed on here. Not sure at what price they sold at but they did all sell. I know Des looked at a yellow car(wide body with a turbo engine) which i think Matt? bought in the end? So there is a market . Having been lucky enough to get a few pax laps in Ben and Phil's 964 3.8 RSR 's i can see the attraction.
