Potential Battery Issue ?

I use a Porsche trickle charger to keep my car charged up. However, I recently left the car unattached to the charger for 4 days without use, and the battery went flat invoking the alarm. I was surprised that is had gone flat so quickly, as it was new 15 months ago (Bosch HSB096 with 5 year warranty).

Subsequently, it seems that the red LED light on the charger is permanently on, which never used to be the case. Does this suggest a problem with the car battery....or maybe some other issue ? My neighbour uses the same sort of charger on his 993, and the red LED is rarely on !

nothing worst than a unreliable battery, if you have a 5 yr warrenty then get it changed. personally i leave my car for 5 or 6 days with no problem, if you are using a conditioner it may have 'masked' a failing battery or problem ? start with the battery (or not as the case maybe) once they go they need too go !

The red LED will stay on for several days if trying to recover a well discharged battery. Maybe nothing to worry about.

although many trickle chargers claim to be ok to leave on permanent they are not.

They eventually they cook the battery.
I have loads of trickle chargers at work and seen then ruin many batteries when left on permanent.

Put Your trickle Charger on a 7 day timer and trickle charge it one day a week.

Yes but a almost new battery shouldn't discharge in 4 days should it?

Regarding charger, I used the one from Porsche for 5 months during the winter, no cooking here. It let's the battery drop to about 80% and then starts charging, for days and days...

I have been using the Porsche charger/conditioner permanently connected (except when using it) to my 997 for 6 years and still on original battery!
If the battery turns out to be faulty then claim on the guarantee.

Got the battery exchanged under warranty so will keep an eye on the charger now to see if LED light goes out from time to time. If not my neighbour has the same trickle charger so will do a swap to see if charger is the potential issue.

Just because it still works doesn't mean its not damaged in any way.
If a simple trickle charger like the Porsche one could analyse a battery that well they would cost a fortune. (And be worth it)

Yes its better than leaving it cold and uncharged. but there's always a small price to pay.
I had more batteries cook on trickle/Float charge than not.

Yours is getting used so therefore discharging, But if you left your battery on charge for six years without using it it would probably be cooked.

therefore I personally use a timer.

After all, I have to disconnected it to drive it.
